in Credit cards
I went into Debenhams today intending to buy make-up. The lady asked if I had a Debenhams card. I said No as I don't shop there often. She said it was quite good and I would get 10% off my purchase today. I said I did NOT want a credit card (I do not have any credit cards as I'd rather have the cash to pay than borrow) but she insisted it WAS NOT a credit card. She said it was a store card so I thought OK, a bit like the Nectar or Tesco clubcard so I signed up.
When I went to pay, about £50, she did not ask for my debit card or cash. She simply swiped the temporary card I was given (the real one should arrive in 7 days). I was also given a free gift of a bath towel.
So, since I did not 'pay' it means it is a credit card, innit? The paper I was given with it, which I signed, says things like APR: 24.9%; Cash rate: 26.478%; total charge for credit: £188.52
I really don't want a credit card but before I jump in guns blazing, do the above figures mean it's good? Does it mean I will get a bill and have to pay £188.52 instead of the £50 purchase?
A store did the same to my husband recently. He came home with a paper and said it was a storecard. We rang them up to cancel straightaway when I saw he'd signed up to a credit card. Is this a new sneaky way of doing things?
Will I have to return the stupid free gift (it is a nice towel
)
Please advise. Thank you.

You haven't signed up for a credit card. You have signed up for a store card.
Pay the balance off as soon as the bill comes through and then cut it up. You will not be charged interest if you pay the full balance.
I have had 2 store cards for 7 years and have never paid interest, but that is because I always pay balance in full.Overdrafts transferred to MBNA £953.40/£4279.80 Car insurance (on CC) £461.98/£751.98  Bank of mum and dad £1500/£5000Total debt repaid £2915.38/£10,031.78 (29%):T Owed [STRIKE]£10,031.78[/STRIKE][STRIKE] £7400[/STRIKE] £7116.40 Pay off as much as you can in 2011 challenge £1127.60/£40000 -

Only a relief if you pay it off straight away and don't use it again. The fees on missed/late payments on store cards are extortionate.Overdrafts transferred to MBNA £953.40/£4279.80 Car insurance (on CC) £461.98/£751.98  Bank of mum and dad £1500/£5000Total debt repaid £2915.38/£10,031.78 (29%):T Owed [STRIKE]£10,031.78[/STRIKE][STRIKE] £7400[/STRIKE] £7116.40 Pay off as much as you can in 2011 challenge £1127.60/£40000

Thanks again. TBH, I'd rather miss out on the paltry 10% off the purchase than get a storecard. I thought it was like a nectar card where I got points to be used for future purchasesI smelt a rat when she didn't collect any payment from me

Did you not smell the rat giving all your personal details and signing the credit agreement?Overdrafts transferred to MBNA £953.40/£4279.80 Car insurance (on CC) £461.98/£751.98  Bank of mum and dad £1500/£5000Total debt repaid £2915.38/£10,031.78 (29%):T Owed [STRIKE]£10,031.78[/STRIKE][STRIKE] £7400[/STRIKE] £7116.40 Pay off as much as you can in 2011 challenge £1127.60/£40000

I have a debenhams card, used right, there is nothing wrong with storecards.
What will happen is you will get a statement through the post, with the cost of your purchases, minus the 10% discount. It will have a payment date and as long as you pay it by then, that will be it nothing more to pay and you don't have to use it ever again.
You might even find you have 3 months to pay it, with no interest, which is what happened when I got my card.
So at the end of the day, you will basically have saved 10% on your purchases, even if you don't use the card ever again.
In the future, you will be offered 5 or 10% off purchases occasionally as well as some other benefits, nothing too special, but you might use them.
If you use the card, as long as you pay the full balance by the payment date, then you will never pay interest.
In my case, I saved £25 off my first purchase and never paid a penny in interest, by paying it off in full by the payment date.
I put the card away and haven't used it since.0 -

When you fill out a form for a nectar card you do not have to sign a credit agreement.0
