I would stagger them in a pattern so in the length of your room they are central....so equal lengths left at each end on the first row, then it will all tie in nicely, imho. If a job's worth doing it's worth doing right...;)

In both these examples I would be left with a piece of approx 20cms. If I left this down one side it would look uneven and if I alternated sides I would have this at the doorway which I don't want.

OK, have been sitting working it out for you...

put in a row that has a full length at the end of the row, then another, and you should be left with a row end that is 12cm long. This is 4" in old money so not that short....

the next row starts with a piece 103.5 long, next goes one that is 138, leaving a piece for the end that is 46.5 cm....

so you're moving along 34.5cm each time....(that's a quarter of the board length, so you don't have too many small bits left)

now draw this pattern on graph paper, to scale.... then work out where to put your room on the pattern so you don't have short bits at the door....

then ends of the rows will be.... 12cm, 46.5 cm, 81cm, 115,5cm or if you start from the opposite way round 138, 103.5, 69, 34.5cms...

hope this makes sense to you.

p.s. editted to add - this is for the longest part of the room, in the shorter area you'd have a couple of ends that were 13.5cm, but that would tie in well enough with the other ends where there would be 12cm. The eye wouldn't notice that.

Thanks ailuro. Been trying to get it onto an Excel sheet (no graph paper) and am getting interrupted constantly by annoying people both big and small!

Will try to get a diagram sorted out again. Not sure about the 34.5 cms bit at the door though. Really didn't want to have as small as that there but I think I may not have a choice. Appreciate you sitting working things out.:D

We laid our quick-step laminate with full board, 2/3rd board and then 1/3 board which gave a nice overlap. I thuoght that was from the instructions but possibly not.

Did someone want graph paper? here or make your own layout here

For me it should be random staggering I would just start and see how I got on.

Well WW3 has just erupted in my house tonight so the laminate will need to hang fire until tomorrow.

The ironic thing is, after taking an age to decide on how best to lay it....... you hardly see any of the floor once the bed and drawers etc are in there because the room is so small.

Appreciate all you replies, thank you. :)

No worries andy, thanks for giving it some thought anyway. :)

I found a vid on the maker's website that I hadn't noticed before, actually showing the full board, 2/3rds board and 3rd board idea and I liked the way the joins were more staggered and had more distance between them but then again it's swings and roundabouts because the joins might be more uniformly laid out but doing it this way leaves me with little bits at the end of the rows.

That said, they wouldn't be seen as the bed and bedside cabinet etc would be over them.

Will let you know how it goes. :)

Well we ended up going for the 'thirds' option. The joins are very visible, I knew they were meant to be as the boards were the 4V grooved style but I didn't appreciate just how visible until they were down.

If I'd just done a more random layout, I dont think it would have worked too well simply because the joins are so visible.and if I'd gone for the otion to have 4 staggered rows then the joins would have been too close to each other I think.

It's not quite finished yet (joiner arrived and is now doing it for me) but it's looking ok I think. Sun is streaming in the window and the room looks nice with its (kiddy on) oak floor and white walls. Happy days. :D
