Oh I do dislike the few days leading up to payday! We both get paid next week and I have a plan! It seems to work on paper so hoping we don't have another expensive month. September was a mixture of a mini-break, car MOT and repairs and paying for swimming lessons and piano lessons which soon added up.

Think I will feel better once the wages hit and I can start shuffling some money around.

93p Tilly tidy made, think that will be the last of the week as it was the dregs of the account! Certainly stops you spending when you pay things off and save money on payday rather than waiting to see what is left at the end of the month.

S&S ISA growing nicely through my monthly deposits, it is just about recovering after a blip last month.
I get a payrise in a few weeks :j so from the new year would like to come up with a new plan which sees us saving more for the children (maybe switching child trust fund to an ISA), increasing DH pension contributions, increasing standard OP to the mortgage.

Sent DH to do a frugal top up food shop yesterday, he spent £30!!!!!

If only we got cost of living payrises too!

Have given in and had a glass of wine this evening and tied the wine run in with a post 5pm shop to grab some bargains. Got 2 quiches 59p each, quality quarter pounder burgers (we may turn into meat balls) 79p, 2 packs of kievs 59p each and a lettuce for 12p! Freezer is full so I mentioned to DH about having a challenge and spend £xx for the rest of the month. We would still need to buy fruit, bread, ham, milk and yogurts to keep us going.

Lulabelle has switched child trust funds to ISA's. Ed has had some good advice I believe. Apart from the annual statement, dd's is rather meaningless. Be good to be able to increase the investment. It is something else on the 'to do' list.

Keeps you focused doesn't it Helen.

Today is dragging, have been up since 6am but not wishing the weekend away!

We have a viewing later which we need to disappear out of the house for so I feel like that has taken over the day. House tidy, just needs hoovering and surfaces checked. We had a viewing yesterday hence there being little to do!

DH is going to take DS for a swimming lesson and I think I'll make a hot chocolate after my jobs and sit with dd and do some reading. She is a fab reader but doesn't sit with a book for pleasure and I want to nurture it. She has a fabulous R0ald Dah1collection not being read!

Have cancelled a cc for DH and myself this morning, we took them out on a cashback deal and the 0% offer has served its purpose. One less thing to worry about should we move.

Have decided to set a £50 food challenge for the rest of the month. Would see our monthly total around £225 which is pretty typical and using cash ultimately means the cc won't be used. The bonus points are reducing so I am going to go back to using the current account for food spends, or maybe cash each month as that definitely makes you think twice. Nothing like a shrinking pile of cash to make you question if a purchase is necessary! T3sco have also kindly sent us some vouchers worth £6.25 off frozen goods (typical that the freezer is full but may use if for frozen veg etc).

  • Hi CathT, your diary is on my must-read-when-I-get-some-spare-time list! How old are your children? Mine are still really small (3 years old and 19 months), but I am already looking forward to the day we can dust off my old Roald Dahl books for them, not to mention my Judy Blume books for DD! xx

  • I was trying the cupboard challenge but I found the kids couldnt cope with hardly having anything in! (that they liked anyway) And I go through stages of bulk cooking in the slow cooker then cant be bothered to do it before work. Its tiring being organised all the time lol
