Beware!! I ordered an American Express Card. It came bearing the wrong salutation (Miss instead of Mr) - their mstake. I was initially told the card was valid, then they said it was invalid. It was eventually replaced but I had inactivated the account. Amex agreed to reactivate and supply a new card.
They told me the 5% Cashback period would run from the time that this new card was issued. A couple of days ago I received a letter advising that the new was due, I called to check the actual date that the cashback would expire - it was next month!! They insisted on calculating the three month cashback period from the time of the initial faulty card.
I told them I would not use the account if they failed to honour their agreement. I was told I would be 'called back' within 48 hrs. No call was received, I received a letter today saying they were 'sorry' to loose a customer.
Sharp practice by American Express:mad: . Shame on them. I would have had to maintain the card for a year to get the shortchanged 'cashback'. I shall stick with Capital One who have goven good service, even if the cashback is lower at least they have not spoken to me with forked-tongue.

Has the 5% cashback offer on Amex Platinum been going long enough for anyone to have actually received it i.e. more than a year?
I only ask because I was about to apply for one when I found this discussion, which has made me rather wary. I phoned Amex yesterday, because a link on the Platinum application page to Card Terms and Conditions brought up a credit agreement referring (in the Definitions section) to a Nectar card (!!) - they said they would update it, but haven't yet.
Both that agreement and another I linked to from a different page (which did refer to the Platinum card) had a section on rebates which listed the 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% tiers that follow the 5% offer, but had no mention of the 5% offer itself.
All this has not inspired me with confidence!0 -

I have the 5% offer with them and it is stated on every one of my statements that I will receive 5% cashback for the first three months.0 -
Hello
Does anyone else do this?
Use there amex cashback CC to make purchases then pay it of with an amex charge card? This way you get the cash back from the CC and points from the charge card plus a whole host other benefits from the charge card (free insurance etc) Plus this way you get 60 days credit !
I've both cards but surely you can't pay off the Amex Platinum credit card with the charge card. I would have though, even if possible, that the charge card payment would count as a cash withdrawal with all the associated costs.0 -

you can only use a debit card to pay off an amex card, not any credit or charge card. if you have a gold/platinum charge card you can withdraw cash and use this to pay the credit card bill but you are charged £3 per £100 withdrawn. Using a green charge card the ammount withdrawn from cashpoint will be taken from your bank via direct debit 3-5 days after the cash withdrawal0 -

I called them to ask them to explain, however they could not!? The guy said that yes I was on 5% and that was effectively that. I asked to why the moneyback is not represented in £sterling (aka egg style) however he admitted it could be confusing and it was the system they were using. It Certainly is confusing, he can not explain it either.
So my moneyback is double at present at 5% what does it show for when you break through the spend limits? I am not happy, as no one knows how this works out. eg moneyback spend £2020 = what does this mean in cashback to my account?
I am getting a moneyback breakdown sent to me in the post, after being offered it by the chap on the phone. Will see what this says. Why does no one know how calculations are worked out? 5% = double your moneyback spend for 3 months...? what happens after 3 months then the spend limits being broken?0 -
what does this mean in cashback to my account?
If you spent £1010 in the first 3 months and you are on the 5% deal then that equals £50.50.
I appreciate it's confusing and rubbish but I believe that AMEX will keep their word, so why worry too much? Why does no one know how calculations are worked out?
Well I do.
It's 1010 * 0.05 which is fairly easy.what happens after 3 months then the spend limits being broken?
You go onto 0.5% up to £3.5K, then 1% up to £10K then 1.5%.
From what I have been told the amount you've spent in the first 3 months is included for this purpose. So say you spent £3.5K in the first 3 months, then you'd go staright to 1%.0 -
for more than 1 year i used to pay off my nectar cc from amex in full directly through bank transfer. i got platinum card which i never use. last month while i paid off my nectar card as i normally do, they credited the money to platinum card which i never use. now effectively i have missed my card payment which might show up on credit file, for no fault of mine. i informed amex, they did say i might have by mistake credited the other card. i told them off politely, hence they will recredit my nectar account. any one has had a similar problem? any suggestions what can be done about the possible problem of negative mark on credit file? What good am I, if I am like the rest. - Bob Dylan0

Er when I tried to put my Amex into a positive balance using the online system, it won't let me. Did you do it through your bank or through the Amex website?Kavanne
