Buying laptop from ebay

Hi, has anyone bought (knows someone who's bought) a laptop from ebay. I've been looking at a few listed through ebay companies but not sure if it's a good idea.
To be honest I've not used ebay that much and would prefer to hear horror stories before paying any money. I'm a student so cheap laptop would be helpful.
Would be grateful for any advice,
Thanks

Personally if I was buying a laptop I would be paying a bit more and looking at sellers that are offering some sort of warranty on EBay normally the bigger companies. I favour going down the refurbished route and would suggest looking at morgan auctions (remember all prices are plus VAT) or rhe morgan shop.

Or try here:- http://www.itcsales.co.uk/ (look at the seconds section)

I think rules can be relaxed a little if you have sound knowledge of computers but otherwise I would tread warily. I am sure there are some cracking bargains but just remeber if it is in the "too good to be true category" it probaly is.

    Good luck

  • Don't judge everyone by scammer's standards - I sell brand new laptops on Ebay, with full manufacturer's warranty (no, I'm not advertising, I have a different ID on Ebay to the one I use on here!). I make sure that my customers are more than happy, will go the extra mile for them (drove 50 miles with one on Friday for someone who needed it urgently) and have 100% great f/b.

So there are some trustworthy laptop sellers, just make sure to do your homework.......................;)
I only exist in my own mind - if you can see, hear or read me, you are a product of my imagination.

I used to sell laptops on eBay as well. I had about 500 feedbacks from buyers, all of them positive, so also disagree strongly with dazza32.
What do you want to do with your laptop? If you let us know, we'll point you to the best deal, either on or off eBay.
    Can I help?

I'm also looking for a laptop in the £400 (ex Vat) range. Something like:
    • 15" screen
    • 60 Gb Hard drive
    • 512Mb - 1Gb Ram
    • Centrino
Just something I can use while at Uni for surfing, iPod, watching movies (and digital TV), email, word processing etc.

Ebay looks very tempting, but I think I'm expecting too much for my budget so will be scammed :(

    Help,

    Ian
  • Thanks to everyone who replied. Good to hear from people who actually sell laptops too! Will definitely be looking for warranty and have been checking feedback on quite a few dealers.

Will mainly be using for Uni, doing nursing so needs to be laptop as constantly moving around.
Will need to use word obviously and spreadsheets etc...
Decent internet connection for downloading journals (pref wireless.)
USB port as uni doesn't use floppys
    CD/DVD drive

Needs to run at decent speed so I'm not waiting for hours for journals and have good storage due to large amount of coursework (Will be saving this to USB pens etc... as well but the more places it's stored the less likely I am to lose it!)

Pretty basic stuff really, although my boyfriend would like a DVD Rewrite so he can steal it for game playing (may just buy him external one for his desktop!)

Thanks again for all your help.
  • My DH bought a laptop on Ebay and we had loads of hassles - was not as described, seller never answered phone etc. Finally resolved it after disputes etc. Just after he purchased the seller received several negs and made feedback private - was just unlucky I think though.

ive sold a few laptops on ebay.. and im not a scammer.. just be careful which buyer you buy from... and remember if an offer looks to go to be true it probably is.. if you can try and pick up the laptop and pay cash on pickup.. you can then inspect the laptop before you pay for it..
