Carpets, what's the most cost effective way

We have 56 Square meters to lay carpets on.

After getting a few very expensive quotes from the local independent carpet shops I came across the nearest Carpetright.

Selecting what we want was much easier then the local shop. With good natural light (like we have at home), much larger choice of materials then the local shops and surprisingly no pushy salesmen.

The price of carpets was about 25% less then the independent.

I spoke to the the salesmen that gave me the shpill about their fitting service and added options for underlay etc' which inflated the basic price.

So far so very expected.
Should I use their fitting?
Is it cheaper just to buy the carpets from them and get a local fitter to fit it? (Gloucester area)

We have most of the wooden grippers still on the floor from the old carpet, should we keep them?
Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

I got in touch with the fitter who fits carpets for a local independent supplier. He suggested using polypropylene contract carpet which he could get himself for a lot less .Also underlay was much cheaper too .Saved me about £500 altold. If you can get underlay separately you'll find it cheaper because retailers load the price on those

    Hi
Check out www.carpet-underlay-shop.co.uk . I used them, very very cheap. Ordered one day and were delivered 9am next day. Great quality.
Got shop to measure up first. Bought carpet from shop and used their fitting service as it was reasonable. The fitters were contracted to the shop so they didnt care where I had bought the underlay/grippers/door plates. They just fitted everything for me.
You are right they make a bomb on underlay etc. Get a break down of costs and tell them you can source your own extras. If you can get the carpet home yourself you can avoid delivery charge. The shop I use regular is Walter Wall Carpets and they are very accomodating. I saved £100's.
There has been a few threads on here about cheap ways to carpet your home if you can find them

Fogot to say if their fitting service is expensive you can always employ a fitter of your choice from the phone book. At the end of the day if you choose to, you may only purchase the actual carpet from them

They may have had carpets which were 25% cheaper, but were they identical.

Go back to your independent with the name of the carpet you are looking at in Carpetright and see what they can do it for.

    Completely agree. pretty surely not!
  • I just put carpet down last month, reallt nice good quality carpet from ebay which cost just over £100 for 5x7 metre roll, my husband put it down but I think it is a great way to save money and if you have a freind or relative that can help I bet it will save a fourtune! and it was delivered in 2 days which can't be bad :)
  • Best thing is to price it up both ways as no one can know for sure.
You probably will be best getting your underlay sourced elsewhere (upgrading it if you can as it will make a difference)

i bought my hall/stair carpet from a national chain when the sales were on. supply only.
then i got the local carpet fitter to do it for 50 quid.

he also does/did subby work for the above chain.

All 'carpet Right' fitters are independent. Thats why you pay them separately.
Had a single piece , 8 metres long by 5 metres , installed by 2 fitters, who could just stagger into house because of the weight. Took over two hours to fit, their bill about £100 , very reasonable.

As I have posted many times, where are the local , cheap independent carpet shops??
Those around here are extremely expensive, have limited samples compared to the giant chains.
