Call your existing suppliers, they will tell you your annual consumption. Put these figs into the comparison sites (not your monthly DD amounts), and then sigh up with your chosen supplier via a cashback site.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • thanks mate but i only been here 6 months.. bought at 14th of february 2010

They will still be able to give you an estimate.
Or pro-rata using your bills over 6m, should be OK as you commenced in mid-winter.

  • Right , london electricity says i barely use any electricity for a 3 bed semi the first month(february) was on a high up 400 units but that was because i done quite a bit of works too the average is 110 units and she said i should lower my direct debit(45 a month) ..my expenditure is around 20 pounds a month

british gass a bit more complicated as they said im charged that much for first 600 units then that much for the rest
but average 132 units a month

so 110 units electricity and 132 gass

does any one know how to calculate how much i m paying per gas per month(132 units) standard rate?
is that ok for a semidetached ?

i will go to uswitch and money saving and see whats best

You don't need to know what you are paying for gas (though surely you know from your DD?) Go to the comp sites, put in your annual consumption (NOT your monthly DD figures) and your current tariffs and it does all the work for you.

If meter reads cubic metres multyply 132 units times [11.2] times 12 months ie =132x11.2 x12 = 17740 kilowatts yearly use [ 11.2 is conversion factor] ie[ metre cube units to kilowatts]

Electricity straight forward Units per month x 12 = kilowatts per year
  • I'm going through the same at the moment... Did you write down the reading of you feb when you first moved in? OWL buy the one on mapline at the mom £29 pounds as it calculate the everage day month and such... for everything erlse use this calculator http://smartmeter.ukpower.co.uk
    I hope it's helps :-)
  • well i hope the numbers they gave me are the right ones
the electricity i m sure it should be about that much as we dont use much but hopefully that 17740 kwh sounds sort of average

seems i with the standard rate i m paying about 850 for gas and electricity which seem very low....
its my first house and i thought gass roughly 900 and electricity around 700 ...

u switch brings around 200 on saving from eon ..

will call british gas another time to make sure of these digits they gave me

eon gives a free monitor too

17,740KWh is around the average for a 3 b/r house with gas CH.
1,320 kWh electricity is about a third of the average-very low. At 10p unit that would cost you only £132pa.

  • Whatever you do and wherever you go, do a couple of things to ensure the best price. Pay by DD and Manage your account on line and of course buy your Gas and Electric from the same supplier.
May be worth looking for a fixed price dela as prices look like they may rise I am with Eon and they have been good, by managing your account on line and supplying regular readings when asked you will always have accurate bills and therefore accurate DD payments.
Good luck and hope this helps
