Buyer with unconfirmed address

Sold an item on buy it now around £65 inc p&p, I stated in the auction listing if a buyer wanted to pay with paypal they must have a confirmed address with paypal. Buyer buys it, pays with paypal and has an unconfirmed address! They have 100% feedback a rating of 15 no neutrals or withdrawn, they have been registered since July 05 and their feedback is private. They have bid on 3 items in the last 30 days and won 1 and left positive feedback
(4.95 sale). I intend to send the item special delivery - should I send it, or insist they pay by a different method.

If your sending special delivery it shouldn't be a problem as you would have a receipt. I have been with ebay for years and only realised a year ago i had to confirm my address and got nearly 20p free ha ha
  • I wouldn't chance it. It takes 10 minutes to confirm your address. Special Delivery won't help you if it's a fraudulent purchase.

I've messaged them as nicely as possible asking if they could confirm their address or would they like to pay by another method, now awaiting reply. Don't want to upset anyone I just don't want to chance losing my item and money.
  • I use three different addresses for ebay .
    1 my home address confirmed
2 my parents address if item need to be signed for
3 my friend who lives 40 miles away .
    I always pay using paypal
Never been questioned as to why I use a different delivery name /address

You've probably never scammed anyone either, but it does happen :)

With my lower priced auctions I just usually have a quick look at feedback and not had any major probs. This is a more expensive auction for me and I am being a bit more cautious. Is there a genuine reason why adresses aren't confirmed I thought it was just a phonecall?

I usually check the paypal and ebay address match then email them asking them to confirm the address before sending.
One day I might be more organised...........

    Yes, it's just a phonecall.

The important part is if you qualify for seller protection you FORFEIT it by sending to an unconfirmed address.

Unconfirmed address just means that when the transaction was authorised by the credit card issuer, the post code did not match what was entered. This can be for several reasons:

    1) The post code didn't match
    2) The issuer does not support the AVS feature to check the postcode
    3) The buyer didn't use a credit-card (may have had credit in paypal already) and thus there was no online authorisation of his credit card.
    4) All or none of the above.

Paypal aren't very forthcoming with information about this - which is unfortunate (hence item 4 above). I'm sure all sellers would like a bit more information as to WHY it was unconfirmed.

One thing you should do is check out his paypal status rather than his eBay status. You can do it like this:

    1) Log into paypal.
    2) Click on the 'send money' tab.
    3) Enter the users paypal e-mail address (should be in the pulldown menu)
    4) Enter Amount 1.00
    5) Select type of purchase Goods (other)
    6) Click continue

You will then see their account status such as:

Account Status: Non-U.S. Verified Personal Member (1)

If you click on this link, you will see further information in a pop-up box. Look to see if he is a verfied user, how long he's been a member, and his seller reputation count.

Be sure to cancel this transaction before continuing!

    Hope this helps.
