Best PAYG network for phone wrecker?

I got a T-mobile phone from asda for £9 for my son. It seemed a good deal at the time as it offered unltd texts for £10 a month top-up.

However, this didn't count on my son being the sort of person to try his best to lose / wreck his phone. Finally succeeding after only 1 month (the day after I put another £10 on it) last night by leaving it in his pocket when the phone went through the wash. The phone is wrecked and the SIM is showing a large black mark across half the contacts.

T-mobile want £10 to send me out a new SIM plus the cost of a phone plus an obligatory £10 top-up, so £30 all in. Speaking to someone in a local phone shop, they seemed to say that some networks are better at replacing / transferring numbers to a new sim in a similar situation. Does anyone know the approximate costs for this on all the networks (voda, O2, Orange, Virgin, Asda and Tesco) along with their policy on replacement handsets and / or transferring credit?
