it seems we can never be parted spoon........

O they are gorgeous - they really are my favourite mammal!

we saw them inthe Seaquirum in Miami where they run a rescue programme, where possible they return them to the wild but some have been too damaged to go back. They get hit by boats all the time, really sad. Also people try and feed them and give them fresh water which can just harm them - they are protected and you will get a huge fine if you are caught doing that. The boats just don't see them - and if they are going too fast.. well you can imagine - they have very stirct speed limits where they are but you know you still get idiots.

i could watch them for days.............

Ahh... poor things, they're so inoffensive it seems a shame they're having problems coping with the world as it is now. People are so destructive (intentionally or not, it doesn't seem to matter unfortunately :(:(). Glad you enjoyed watching them, though

Gotcha again Spoon.

They do have some great Manatee programmes over there to help them - I know SeaWord in Orlando does and also this place in Miami.

The ones we saw they had a big old girl who can produce milk without being pregnant so they keep her as and adoptive mum for any little uns and then they had this other girl who had had her back fin sliced off - really sad - but she better now but she won't be able to go back to the wild. But they do try and get them back out there if they can and they chip them all so they keep track of them.

That's good news, it seems as though there's lots being doing to help them:T. They do need to be in the wild rather than kept in sheltered areas but they just seem to be too vulnerable to cope with the world:(
