Lost mobile phone - when to report to network

Wife has misplaced her mobile phone.
(Yes, shes having a bad week - see thread about dropping in water)

Only noticed this morning, and shes checked work and the cinema (we went last night). Nothing as yet. Although cinema said they would need to talk to security staff tonight.

Phone is a very cheap one - not worth nicking but I'm concerned someone could use it for calls.

Just wondered at what point we should cancel the phone with the network? Obviously, you dont want to be doing this when you lose the phone for half hour down the back of the settee.

Whats the liability for misuse if your phone is lost/stolen? Or do the networks waive this if you report it promptly?

Thing is the phone contract is ending soon. In two days, the number will be ported away from the sim (which will be useless anyway). Just wondered if I should block it sooner than that or whether me blocking it will somehow affect the port away from it.

  • Get them to freeze the number until porting, this will stop it being used and keep it live. Its a win win. do it now (after saying thanks ha ha) simples!

The liability is yours. So get it blocked now! (You can get it unblocked if you find it), and check they have blocked it (by trying to ring it yourself)

You need to report it now. You are liable for all calls made until you do. They can always unblock it if you find it.

Get on the phone now !
  • Ah. Didnt know you could temporarily block it and unblock it. Thought once you phoned they cancelled the sim completely and had to send you another one.

I'm assuming this temporary block wont affect it porting using PAC code to new provider?

While you are pondering, someone could have sold on your SIM and run up several thousand pounds in overseas calls, for which you are fully liable. Why are you hesitating?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

For future reference, if your phone supports it, you could use a PIN based keyboard lock or at the very least turn on the SIM lock to stop it being swapped out.

The former will buy you some time, as you can't get into the device to make calls without the PIN and the latter will prevent the SIM working in another phone without the another PIN.
  • You should block ur num asap.Inform network operator and close ur number.if you request to network
operator, they will provide you same number.
