As mentioned above, it depends if you need to be in walking distance of a station... I know you're keeping it open, but a yes or no to this is pretty much essential as it makes a huge difference!
What about Chingford, E4? Small town, but lots of countryside on your doorstep.

Can anyone recommend a good rural location within M25 where we might be able to buying a 4 bed detached house without stretching our budget?

Not inside the M25 but look at villages around Milton Keynes, North Bucks is very nice and only 30 minutes into Euston from station.
£300-£350k gets a nice 4 bed detached in that area0 -
I would look at some of the villages around Milton Keynes such as Studham and Dunstable.

You will struggle to get detached in these areas on your budget Id imagine
E4 area try Sewardstone, just lovely v rural feel , although public transport isnt great IMO.
