Can I position my sub woofer behind the sofa?

I have just bought a surround sound system and I want to know if I can put the sub woofer behind the sofa? (We are getting a new carpet fitted on Monday and I want to hide the speaker cables)
All the diagrams show it next to the TV, will it make a difference to the sound if it's behind us?
Thanks in advance...

Low frequency sounds are hard to assign a direction to. I would be concerned with such a speaker causing resonances in the floor and furniture. Speaker stands can reduce this. Why not try to find out the best position for the speakers given a range of soundtrack material. A good one for big booms is U-571.

Hi Joe, I am not sure exactly what you mean about resonance in the furniture and the floor, it will be going on thick pile carpet behind a leather sofa.
Can you get speaker stands for the big sub woofer? I have bought some for the 4 smaller speakers.0 -
The whole point of a sub woofer is to make the house shake a bit..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

The idea of speakers is to move the air and not surrounding objects. Speaker stands can help isolate surrounding objects from a vibrating source of sound. There is plenty of time to check out the positioning of the sub woofer and whether unwanted vibration is a factor. It is all down to what sounds best to you or perhaps what is quietest to your neighbours. The carpet should help. Sound does tend to bounce off hard surfaces and create echos. You want to listen to the soundtrack and not re-listen to the echo of it.

LOL I might be scared if the house shakes:rotfl:
Fortunately we don't have any attached neighbours so we can make a fair bit of noise without upsetting anyone:beer:
I am planning to have a play tonight and see what sounds good, if we can decide where the speakers go before Monday am we can run the cables under the carpet and avoid the trailing wires that are a health hazard and look awful.
Thanks both for your advice:T0 -
You might find out how well your sofa is made. Ours rattles.
Enjoy :beer:ac's lovechild0 -
We haven't got it yet so I can't test that bit LOL0

My Sub is hidden behind the Television, as long as your mid and tweeters are positioned acoustically, you can put your sub almost anywhere without fear of distortion.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

My problem is the tv is on a glass stand and I don't have room on it or behind it, to hide the sub, we have gone a bit on the minimalist side this time around so we don't want this huge (relatively) speaker in pride of place.
I am now a bit worried that having the sub behind the sofa I might spill my wine when watching films with loud booms LOL.0
