Fire/water damage covered under contents insurance without accidental damage option?

Hi there

I have been searching for this information on the internet for hours now but can't seem to find anything.

I need to renew my contents insurance policy and I was wondering about the need for accidental damage cover.

General fire and flooding are convered as standard but what i wanted to know specifically is are fires or water damage that are accidentally caused by us covered? - lets say if there is a cooking accident in the kitchen that burns the kitchen units or someone throws a cigarette that starts a small fire, or the kids leave a tap running in bathroom that damages a carpet or we leave a gas tap on etc.

Are these covered under a standard policy or do you have to have accidental damage coverage? if anyone has any links to hard information eg policy documents or other info would be appreciated.

I called one or 2 insurance companies but the people i spoke to didnt seem very sure about the answer.

thanks
Aroon

Fire is automatically covered, even for accidents, but not arson.

You need AD cover for overfilling a bath.

If you read the policies, water damage is covered under standard if it is from a fixed water or heating installation. Does not extend to accidental damage.

I would always have AD cover, as I think it is worthwhile to have.

I would refer you to a reply to another post of yours. You really are better off speaking to Insurers or brokers. You can then ask for a full explanation of the cover and terms/conditions to see if it meets your requirements. I find it pretty poor if they cannot answer your questions, when you have phoned them.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Ive just checked my current policy. Think you are right - under fire it has no exclusions at all but under water damage it states water has to come from a fixed water or heating installation - so looks like a tap left running wont be covered under standard policy without accidental damage.
