Not sure, but there may be a bios setting related to usb support for legacy devices which might help. Clutching at straws, but have you tried a different usb port?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Not sure about Dell, but most pc's go into bios settings by pressing Del. (delete) key at startup, but I suppose that is not an option for you, worth a try?ac's lovechild0

Got to bios by pressing f2, does not seem to be any options that look helpful

When you press F8 to get into Safe Mode, does it initialy give you a Yes/No option to select System Restore or continue into Safe Mode?

no, just windows home xp, or safe mode
just borrowed a friends usb keyboard and mouse, but they made no difference

it seems to me that you have installed the drivers for the 64 bit edition of winows xp, i think you might have to do a dell systm restore
edit- iv just read its compatable for other os0 -
