Android apps advice

Just after a bit of advice on downloading apps for my new phone. I'm a newcomer to the world of smartphones and am really unsure as to what is safe to download from the android app market.

What should I be looking for and what should I be avoiding?

I always check the comments pages first, too many negative comments usually means not too hot, even if safe.

When you download you get a list of what the application has access to- read them and make sure it is not too much- why would a game want access to your contacts for example. Most are just normal- full net access or read phone state and identity to see if your on a call.

One useful app for helping save the battery power is Advanced Task Killer Free, this will stop aps running in the background, it works well.

As mentioned check the feedback on the app and you should be able to see what access the app has prior to downloading but you can check again after and remove it if your not happy.

I have only ventured into the free applications but a couple of good free games are Bonsai Blast and GemMagic, they do have adverts but they are not to bothersome.

I think some apps will access your internet connection even when running in background, that may use some of the online allowance, another good reason to use the app killer to force them off.
I believe this is true as I have only had a smartphone for a couple of months myself.
