Hi, I've never been on this board before, so I hope this is the right place to post! I don't know a lot about techie things but I'm looking for a new digital camera because we're going on a big family holiday next year and I want to try to get some really good pics which hopefully I will be able to blow up quite big. I've never bought any electrical things from QVC before, I think that QVC are sometimes overpriced esp when you add in the P & P but today they are selling a Cannon 10 mega pixel camera for £298.92 (with a 512mb memory card). Does anyone think this a good deal? Does anyone know how big would I be able to enlarge these pics to without loosing clarity? Or would I be better off waiting till after Xmas when prices are bound to be cheaper? It also does some gadgety things which I don't really understand - DIGIC II image processor and iSAPS which apparently improves speed.
I don't want to be seduced by the QVC presenters who can sell snow to eskimos so would really appreciate any ideas.
Thanks loads in advance
Kerry

Have a google. you can get it cheaper elsewhere. Although of course you can return it to qvc if it isnt what you want.0 -
wow thank you so much, you've just saved me £700

Does you think its a good buy or is it worth waiting till after Xmas0

Yes it looked a good camera, like the change colour option and having colour and black and white and also the large landscapes it does. You almost always find prices cheaper else where tbh.0

Spec for camera
Having a quick look around for any thing cheaper, £219 HERE
I would recommend at least 512mb SD card or ideally 1GB card, not sure what batteries it take but if it takes AA I get some 2500+NiMH batteries at 7dayshop.co.uk
The PowerShot A640 bursts with creative options. Use its 10.0 Megapixels to shoot poster size prints with fine detail. Discover new possibilities with the vari-angle LCD and optional accessories.
Print high quality poster size images with all the incredible detail of 10.0 Megapixels. Crop and trim to create new compositions while keeping your photos extra large and razor sharp.
A 4x optical zoom lens gives you the flexibility to frame shots up close or at a distance without sacrificing quality.
The large 2.5" Vari-angle LCD twists in all directions - ideal for self-portraits and creative shots at unusual angles. Night Display mode aids visibility in low light while a selectable Grid Line display helps with composition. A useful 3: 2 ratio overlay indicates the printable area for standard photo prints.
Canon's DIGIC II image processor manages all camera functions and processes images at high speed for excellent responsiveness and extended battery life. iSAPS is a built-in assistant that uses scene information to optimize camera settings before the shot is taken.
Rely on 9-point AiAF to keep even off-center subjects sharply in focus or use FlexiZone AF/AE to manually select a focus point.
21 shooting modes include a full creative zone for manual control and 10 Special Scene modes for tricky lighting conditions including Snow, Beach and Underwater. My Colors allows color effects to be applied to images and movies.
A high-speed ISO 800 setting allows you to shoot correctly exposed images in low light conditions without using a flash. ISO 800 also enables shooting at higher shutter speeds reducing the risk of image blur.
Safety Zoom offers extra zoom magnification without affecting image quality. Use the Digital Tele-Converter for extra reach on every shot - just like adding a tele-converter lens to the camera.
Focus as close as 1cm and capture all the intricate detail of tiny subjects.
Shoot extra long 30fps VGA quality movies with full audio. View them on the camera's LCD screen or connect to a TV or PC for full screen playback.0 -
thanks you lot are the best, and to think I was about to order this from QVC0

Of course if you don't need to print poster size prints and aren't going to use (or even understand) all the whizzy features you could save even more by buying a more suitable camera.0

Thats very true, and usually I wouldn't get anything like this, but next year me, OH and kids together with my brother and his family are going to disneyland (we've saved for this for three years and its unlikely that we'll do it again) so I really wanted a good camera which would give me pictures which I could blow up quite big maybe to give as presents to grandparents etc, was hoping for A3ish size. Any other ideas would be really appreciated.

Ah I see. Most people just look at their pictures on the PC or TV or print them small so 10Mb is a waste.
One thing I would suggest you do is practice loads before you go so using the camera is second nature and you don't miss those special unrepeatable shots while you fumble around.0 -
Thats a good point, it will give me a chance to play with all the gadgety bits too. Right am going to order it, has anyone ordered from either of the two sites suggested? I've never come across either of them (but then thats not surprising)0
