OK. Thanks for the link, very useful.
svchost.exe started showing today again at 177k (pin 1608) which was allied with 3660 wuauclt.exe and 2792 wuauclt.exe. Just as I leaned over to pick up a pen the svchost dropped to 39k which seems more normal. At least the lappy did not seize up this time.

That is the Windows Update client. Keep monitoring it and see if this carries on. If it does we will need to see if there are any errors in the event log.

It may help if you haven't already if you perform a full windows update manually.

There is one update which did not "take" and tries to update whenever I close down. It happened when I lent the lappy to D/D at uni when hers went awry. Not at that comp at moment so I'll see what the number is. She did complain it hanged up but as she was hundreds of miles away she had to put up with it, thought a lot of it was due to the myriad of tabs and progs open at the same time.

KB976662 is the one that won't install.
