I seem to be getting a file in taskmanager
svchost which gets up to 170,000 and gums up the computer cpu runs at about 50%. I run avira every day and have run a clean,updated, malware bytes a couple of days ago. I also have a log of hijack this if it can throw any light on the problem.C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe

I can, and do, delete this svchost through taskmanager and it clears the problem but would like to prevent it in the first place.

The SVCHost.exe is a platform to launch DLL's - meaning the problem is most likely to be a service on your machine.

1) Go into task manager. In the processes tab, click the view menu > select columns. Put a tick in PID

2) Get the PID number for the svchost that is taking up the CPU

3) Start > run > cmd and press enter

4) Type in the black box tasklist /SVC

5) Find the process that is attached to the relevant PID number - this will tell you what service or program is causing the CPU usage.

went into cmd and typed "tasklist/svc and got "not recognised command.
Started lappy am today. Clicked f/fox and waited and waited. Checked task manager and saw svchost 1608 system 160000. Closed process and all is now ok.

You need a space after tasklist.

Used upper and lower case and a mix of the two. Bet its something simple.

double click svchost, then services.

pctools firewall, threatfire, superantispyware don't help speed. macrium image mounting doesn't need to be running all the time.
