If you only had £3k to spend on a car...

would you spend it all, or spend less incase it went wrong straight away?
And what car would you get using the following criteria:
- will be used to commute 25 miles a day
- we have one baby, maybe another one on the way next year
- would like OH to be able to drive it, he's 6 foot 5 and chunky!
- needs to be able to fit all the baby paraphernalia (sp?) in the boot
I know I'm going to be looking at quite old models in this price range, would like something with a reliable reputation though. Any ideas?

Taking in to account your OH being 6'5", I would have said a VW Passat, from about 02-03.0

Ford Mondeo / Vauxhall Vectra, as new as possible and not discounting high mileage ex-rep ones. (high mileage, low age, well maintained)0

Honda Accord, buy the older model up to about 02 plate, totally bullet proof.
Or a Honda Civic, again older model up to about year 2000, totally reliable.0 -
I drive a Fabia, which having the same chassis and seats as the Polo will be near enough the same size as a Polo, and find the legroom at 6'3" with the seat all the way back is great. Albeit with little room for anyone bigger than a little kid to sit behind of course. Make it the estate version and I am sure all possible baby stuff would fit.Taking in to account your OH being 6'5", I would have said a VW Passat, from about 02-03.
I'd love to have a passat or skoda superb though

I bought a W reg Daewoo lanos saloon about 18 months ago for £800 - it only had about 30,000 miles on the clock, and was very tidy, like a new car inside, with air con and electric windows. I bought it because my last daewoo lanos (bought second hand and run for a decade) had finally died a death. No problems whatsoever so far - its not a flashy car, but it does the job, its reliable, and its comfortable enough!

Rover 45 Diesel with good history will go forever, very reasonable maintenance and will set you back around £1800 for a 2002-2003 with 75k miles.
Aircon, airbags all around and a big boot, my brother is 6"7 and he sits in his with comfort.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!
