Father in laws House Sale delemer

My father in law is in his 70s he is as tight as a pervebiale ducks behind.
We are trying to convince him to go into sheltered accomodation, the local council property is about £80 week. He owns his own house and is reluctant to move and have to pay out money from the sale of his house (say 90k) or use his savings. Has any one any advise on the best way to approach this.
He wants the local authority to pay for this accomodation , but his savings will prevent this happening.
Has anyone any advise?

Is it the sheltered accommodation he's unhappy with or forking out for it?
  • He needs to go into a flat or bungalow, but wants to get as much paid by the state ?

Why does he NEEd to go into a flat or bungalow, whats wrong with where he is,
    Is he happy there.

apart from stairs, (a stairlift would deal with this problem)
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Hopefully he will be turned down outright by the council, assistance is for those who are unable to help themselves. He has his own house and savings why should the local authority pay for his accommodation, once he has used those then he can go back to the council and request support.

If he is elderly and requires sheltered accommodation he isnt long for this world anyway, tell him to sell up his house, take his savings and enjoy life spending it - tell him to go and get himself a thai or russian bride and go out with a smile on his face :D

He probably wants the state to pay for his chairlift :D
  • If he has his own house and/or savings and wishes to go into any sort of rented place, then he will be expected to pay the rent hinself. Why does he expect the State to pay it for him?

He could spend some of his money to make his existing house more user-friendly with a stair lift/downstairs shower room etc.

My sis ter is in this very position, that is what she has done with her money. She also pays for a carer to help her get showered and dressed, a gardener and meals on wheels.

If your relative needs this help with showering etc, (whether he gets it or not), then he may be eligible for Attendance Allowance. This is non-means-tested so they would not take his savings into consideration.

You haven't explained just WHY you are so keen that he should go into sheltered accommodation. There must be a reason.

To get access to the £90k perhaps (which I politely suggest the OP uses by investing in some basic English lessons)?

Er, yes...it took me a little while to work out just what a 'delemer' is.
