To get access to the £90k perhaps (which I politely suggest the OP uses by investing in some basic English lessons)?
Er, yes...it took me a little while to work out just what a 'delemer' is.
How easy it is to ridicule from the comfort of a chair.

Whilst it is unclear what reasons the person has for writing the way they do, much can be interpreted about your characters from your choices of words.

Slightly off topic but how can you be thanked 3 times in 2 posts if you have only posted once?

The OP wrote that his FIL 'needs' to go into sheltered accommodation and 'we are trying to persuade him', but didn't say why.

There is usually a good reason why someone needs this type of accommodation. If they do - find it difficult to cope with stairs, bathroom, looking after self etc - then it is usual to sell up and use the money to pay rent.

Maybe someone should point out to FIL that we are living in extremely cash-strapped times, the council budgets are being squeezed, cuts being made - unless he has been living in a bubble for the last few months and thinks the councils have plenty of money to pay for him! Just reading the local papers one can tell that this is not the case.

How easy it is to run a spell-check over a post from the comfort of a chair.

As for my character: Guilty as implied. Guilty of caring about the increasingly shoddy standards in so many aspects of life in modern Britain. It seems mediocrity is not just tolerated, but celebrated.

And, frankly, if that makes me intellectually snobbish, I don't give a damn.

PS . . I think you meant 'choice' not 'choices'. :D

I feel the same. Everyone will have had a minimum of 11 years in full-time education so there is really no excuse.
Has any one any advice on the best way to approach this.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking us to advise on. Your FIL cannot get free accommodation paid for by the council (or rather, by the council-tax payers where he lives) given that he has resources enough to pay for this himself. It just won't happen.

It just won't happen. And it shouldn't bloody happen.

This is symptomatic of modern life. The FIL has assets of £90,000 yet expects the taxpayer to pay his way for him. Or does he? Perhaps it's the OP who is expecting / hoping the taxpayer picks up the bill, so that he can get their hands on the FIL's house for themselves.

Whatever happened to pride, personal responsibility and independence?

    I despair. I totally despair.

Don't get me wrong. It's not like I give a s**t if house prices go up or down. I already own my own home, and it's value is just a proportion of my net worth.

I think you meant its. ;)

Damn, I've just stooped to your level. Must do better.

    MrChips, a thread was deleted.

Don't you think it's kinda sad to go hunting around the forum looking for other posts with typing errors in, just to make a point?

    Get a job.

I think it stopped with our generation.

the greed that is modern life today is endemic.
And like you, I hang my head in shame sometimes at the human race.

I don't have a problem with greed per se, McKneff. It's a primal instinct.

What frustrates me is the abnegation of individual responsibility; the sense that other people should pay all the time, the sense that it's always someone else's fault or responsibility, and the shameless way threads like this appear with monotonous regularity. If I'm wrong, mea culpa, but this thread symbolises modern Britain - let's stick the old geezer in a home and get his house, and in the meantime the other mug taxpayers will pay for the old boy.

Me me me me me me, bloody me. It's always always about me.
