As somebody who has come off contract to pay as you go, if I purchase A Samsung GalaxyS phone, can I use all the applications such as navigation at no extra cost or is this only available to contract users,

There is no difference between PAYG and contract devices when it comes to how much an app is or its availability. The difference is that the app may use data. Google Navigation for example will need access to the internet to download the route info and maps which will come off your available credit if you don't have a bundle and get charged per MB.

To be honest, I wouldn't use any smartphone on PAYG because of the data issue. The speed at which a PAYG sim can eat up your available credit on data is incredible. There are posts on here about people who have left their phone on standby overnight with £25 credit and woken up to find they have £2 left because the phone has been checking for e-mails every 30 minutes. You just have to miss buying an additional data allowance by 1 day to kiss goodbye to all your credit; it's simply not worth it.

I agree with Oscar: PAYG + DATA = DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN.

The only decent PAYG sim for data usage is GiffGaff, as it comes with 100mb data per day included. If you buy a goody bag, you then get unlimited data.
