Perhaps you can prepare a Hijack This log before proceeding:

Download, install and run the HijackThis Version 2.0.3 installer and use the Quick Start guide to enable you to produce a log for posting here

Thank you for your patience- I've uninstalled 4.8 and reinstalled avast 5. Apologies for giving you completely duff info first time round:o

meh, dont fuss your self, although we might not agree with each other sometimes on these boards as to whats the best cause of action, everyone does try and help and most people do realise that not everyone is quite as techie as ourselves

Thanks - I'm all set now. My shiny new laptop arrived yesterday - ahead of schedule thanks to Ebuyer and I'm very happy with it and now have avast installed on it too so feeling much more secure.

I have to say I'm very impressed with my new toy (was a friends recommendation) and think it will be just perfect for a non-techy like me:)

I aslo can't believe that when I bought it on Monday it cost £475 and now has gone up in price. That makes me even happier!
