If you want to install a software firewall: Zone Alarm for Windows ME

Don't forget to scan your PC for Malware before you install the new solutions.

just wondering, what do you actually use the desktop for (specific programs)? and do you know the specs of it?

i am just wondering since windows ME hasnt been supported by microsoft for quite a while so no longer gets any updates or security patches etc, so am wondering if it would be worth while changing the operating system to something a bit newer
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Why recommend version 4.8 when version 5.0 has been available for some time? I use V5 on XP Home and had no installation problems and no stability issues.

For the laptop, you can use Microsoft Security Essentials once the free trial of whatever has expired on your laptop.

No point installing a firewall if you're accessing the internet through a router. The router will be using NAT and that's enough to protect you from any rogue connection attempts from the interwibble.

Some people may have other reasons for installing a software firewall, such as blocking a program's access to the Internet.
  • Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped me out here. AVG is gone :D and Avast safely installed on the desktop. I'll also install on the laptop when it arrives.

Oh and one small confession (which will highlight than I know sod all about my own pc) - I have Windows XP, not Windows ME as I thought :o

Some of us just shouldn't be allowed near technology!

In which case, I hope you've installed Avast 5.0, and not 4.8.

IIRC an orange A rather than a blue one?
    Move along, nothing to see.
