Do you tip a hotel porter?

Soon I am going away for a couple of days and am staying in a 4 star hotel, which is not usual for me! I know from reading reviews about the hotel that your bags are taken to your room by a porter and as I'm not used to staying in hotels where this happens I am a little unsure whether I am meant to tip or not? I feel a bit embarrassed about it either way so would appreciate some advice, and if I am expected to tip, what is a reasonable amount?

From past experience they do hover at your door expecting a tip! I'd only give them a few pounds, although I'm not sure how much you are supposed to tip! Once when there were 4 of us (and a lot of bags) we did actually need help carrying them to the room so we gave him a £5 note which is all we had on us - I have no idea if that is too much or too little though!0

I probably wouldn't of thought about tipping to be honest but then I am worried the person will hover expecting something and then I would feel silly!0

I never tip, but to be fair, I'd carry them myself rather than have someone do it. I've left them at reception before and they've been taken up for me when the room was ready but then I've not been there to tip them anyway.
I'm afraid I'm not a huge believer in tipping....I don't get tipped for my work, nor would I expect it.0 -
Tipping in general makes me feel better. Most tippable staff (service staff) are on minimum wage and could use a spare beer or two?
I think it is a throw back to when i was in the service industry.
I normally work on 5% universal, so 5% of a table cost at dinner, 5% of a room cost for a porter, especially if you will see them/use them again during your stay. I would say though if there is a porterage/concierge, book a cheaper room!
Side note, in a busy bar, always tip the bar person first round, guarantee less time waiting the rest of the night.Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!0 -

Normally I wouldn't spend so much on a room admittedly, but having recently had a baby I think I deserve some luxury0 -
