Going on holiday, should I feel bad?

I'm going to Italy on Tuesday for a week. I can only afford it because I won back my bank charges from Nationwide (thank you!). Now I really feel I need a break, but I'm also feeling guilty I haven't thrown it all at my debt. Thoughts?

Just go and have an excellent time, sometimes you have to recharge your batteries and come back to a difficult situation with renewed energy.

You've booked it and spent the money, so it's too late now.
So don't torture yourself about whether you should have done so or not. Just enjoy it.0 -
Have a wonderful time:beer:
I was speaking to a friend who is a Money Advisor at the CAB and she said that people who are in debt start to think they should never, under any circumstances spend money on enjoying themselves. She said if she met any of her clients in Morrisons they used to run in the opposite direction and she was sure it was because they thought she would be closely examining the contents of their trolley to make sure there were no luxuries!
So, as long as you haven't booked a round the world cruise on the QE2 in a first class stateroom I'm sure you should sleep with a clear conscience.
However..it'll be just your luck to sit next to a fellow travellor who happens to work in the debt collection department of one of your creditors:eek:
So go easy on the champagne:D0 -
janey, I have fallen into that trap. truth be told Ive alwayts been a bit of a martyr, and being in debt exacerbates that to the Nth degree. Worse is the self -flaggelation of me stupidly looking at flights and I found one to my carribbean paradise for 99 return  I really wanna go ( but I cant anyway, I have appointments & stuff here) but STILL
Just go, enjoy it, come back rejuventated. Take sweets for the journey from home, dont pay those airport prices:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
You've made the decision, booked the holiday so enjoy it! The difference is that now you will be keeping an eye on what you are spending as you go along so you won't just be throwing money away on things you don't want or need. Have a lovely time.0

You've paid off nearly 12k in 15 months and you're asking permission to go on holiday???? Are you mad????? Of course you should go, and not feel guilty.
But, as this is obviously playing on your mind I am prepared to take it off your hands.....;)
Seriously, you're in for a long hard slog, so enjoy yourself. Tip - keep a spending diary. Divide your holiday money by the number of days to give your daily amount, write that at the top of each page, and keep a running total of what is spent and left over each day. Then use what is left to put towards your debts - that way you'll have a little boost as you can reduce your signature as soon as you get back.
Have a great time!A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Lynzpower ....flights and I found one to my carribbean paradise for 99 return
So where did you see this flight????????
If I didn't eat for a month I could go. Mind, OH and cats wouldn't be eating either and I would have to go on my own.
Oh, the sacrifices0 -
Go, my dear. Sorting out debt has its mental and emotional component too, so use this time to 'rally your troops.' And well done on what you've achieved so far!The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

No you shouldn't feel guilty. You've paid off lots of debt and you'll carry on doing so after your holiday. You haven't increased your debt as the money came from your repaid bank charges. Go and have a lovely time. Now ... off you go and do your packing!Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
