Did you not know that you were about to go into overdraft when you withdrew the money?

I am being charged £19 for going £19.99 over my limit for two days. My only income is child benefit. I rang up the bank (HSBC) to ask them to remove the charge and quoted the Act to be told " well it is in your terms and conditions that charges have to be made if you go overdrawn". I was then told they could not do a refund over the phone so I have to go into the branch and discuss it with them and even so they may not refund it as its down to their discretion.

I'm sorry but I don't see how that could be right because by that logic, bank staff would never be allowed to look at anyones accounts at all. When I worked in a bank we looked at peoples accounts all the time, we needed to in order to do the job we were being paid to do.
  • Great thread ... does anyone know if this also applies to direct debt charges ie not enough in the bank for the direct debt... therefore get charged £39... the only income into the account is JSA .. many thanks

  • Hi all,
i,m new and would like to ask a question regarding the topic,I got into debt with barklays bank.I had a credit card with £700,i was in work at the time when i had it.Unfortantly my little boy became very ill and i had to give up work and look after him,i ended u gettng into debt with the bank and the bill went up to £1000.I have been in reciept of benifits the whole time while paying off this debt.I only have 3 payments left until it is clear.Anyway what i would like to know is should barlklays have taken money off me,of waited until i was eligable to go back to work.I,m confused.
  • Hi everyone,

My sister had a direct debit for her home phone bill due to come out off the bank, it wasnt paid as there wasnt enough money in there, they then charged her £40 because of this and she still had to pay the phone bill on top (fair enough), they took the £40 from her i.s, is this allowed and how would she go about claiming it back if so... this was back in september would she still be able to it? It really messed her money up as she had double to pay out and has only just got her finances sorted out because of it.. only a little bit of money to some people but it was a massive amount to her.

    Thanks.

That's nothing to do with you as an employee generally looking at an individuals account.

It's about trawling, analysing, comparing accounts for 3rd party purposes.

    eg.
-another company wanting to contact customers with certain profile/income/account spending.

-analysing by computer whether payments are benefit payments and taking a different action to the norm, as opposed to a specific action at request of customer/employee.
