is my o2 sim card too outdated to be cut into a micro sim?
Hi,
I posted yesterday asking if about the swap my sim feature that o2 offer.
Most people's advice was to cut my current normal sim into a micro sim rather than use the swap my sim feature.
However as I have been with o2 for a long long time I have what looks like an old style sim. It has a different number of contact points to newer sims and is bigger!
I tried to attach an image to show you what my current sim looks like but as a new user I am unable to add that to me post.
Has anyone had any success cutting down these older sims?
Will it work?
In relation to yesterdays question, as I am on a non-iphone sim only monthly contract at present - if I am able to get hold of a blank micro sim [that is not PAYG specific] will I be able to transfer my current non-iphone tariff across to my iphone 4?
Or will o2 realise what i've done and stop it?
Thanks for any advice or shared experiences
Natalie

o2 can certainly realise if an iphone is being used without an iphone tariff. Not sure if they will do anything about it though.
Approximately how many years have you had your SIM for? Mine is 8 years old and needs replacing when I replace my phone as it doesn't have the needed encryption keys for 3G on and so has incredibly slow internet (Google USIM).0 -
Thanks Ehlo.
My sim card is 9 years old, so I assume mine would have the same 3G problem as you mention.0 -
You could try and get a free upgrade phone and that might come with a new sim that could be cut down, or buy a cheap PAYG phone and ask O2 for a newer sim.
I don't think your old sim will work, it wouldn't be a 3G sim if it's that old, weather they will transfer your old sim contract & details onto your new PAYG sim I'm not sure.
Other option is to switch to GiffGaff0 -
call o2 ask for a micro sim they will send it to you for free and use there online service or call them to do a sim swap0

If you do that they know it's most likely to be put into an iPhone 4, if you don't want to switch networks or contract I'd go down the cutting the sim card road.
But best to do the sim swap before cutting.0 -
Just call O2 and ask for a microsim, you don't have to move onto an iphone tariff if you don't want to, but your Visual Voicemail won't work without one. Once you're activated call 2302 from your iPhone and they'll help you set it up as you'll need different APN settings due to being on a non-iPhone tariff. iPhone tariffs use idata.o2.co.uk whereas normal tariffs use wap.o2.co.uk/mobile.o2.co.uk0

I have a drawer full of old, mostly payg sims, some still active, some not, and used them to "test" my sim cutter. I have not yet managed to "kill" a sim by cutting it, but the main thing to watch out for is the fact that some older sims only support 2G data, which whilst better than NO data, will be painfully slow compared with using a 3G sim.
Also some sims have more metal area showing than others and the sim cutter trims a small amount of metal from some sims, but they still seem to work once cut.0
