inkjet printer recommendations

I'm looking for a new inkjet printer, and would appreciate some help. My old Canon i350 needs replacing, and want a replacement compact printer (not an all in one). I've been using non-canon ink as it was much cheaper, and didn't affect the quality.
I've looked at cheap and expensive inkjets, and am finding it difficult to find one that with affordable ink cartridges.
Anyone have any recommendations? Is it worthwhile just buying the cheapest inkjet with sepearate colour cartridges (eg Epson S21?)
Would appreciate any advice! Thanks!!!

Do you want a good photo capable printer or one for general use? What's your budget?
I've only ever used Canon or HP printers so would lean towards those. The Canon Pixma range always seem to get decent reviews and the cartridges (including compatible) are widely available.0 -
Epson range very good and cartridges are only 89p here www.7dayinks.co.uk and also Brother printers are very good and you can get btother cartridges at www.inks2u.co.uk.
cheers

I get mine below quick delivery and reasonable price. I use them on my Epson rx685

Another vote for Epson. I use both www.nd-ink.co.uk and refilling using www.aktivdirect.co.uk .0

Thanks for all the replies, very useful links.
To answer Knarff - the printer is for general use, and am looking for something under £100. I had hoped for something around £50, but would spend more if it meant the ink cartridges were cheaper to buy.
I loved my old Canon printer, but the current ones - seems to cost a lot to get a full set of cartridges.0 -
Can't remember who is selling it, but saw an advert on telly earlier for a Kodak printer that is in a sale and the main selling point was that you can replace all 6 inks with genuine Kodak carts for less than £20.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0

Brother printers are ideal, very cheap compatible cartridges, the printers themselves are very reliable, I have 4 of them.
I have tried all of the others, Canon, HP, Epson, you name it, none are as good as Brother.0 -
I have an Epson Stylus SX415 printer in which I am using genuine cartridges, £23.20 for the four, p&p free. I have used compatibles for my SX200 but ran into trouble with them. The price is about 50% of the recommended price. I was advised to use genuines by somebody who was in the compatible trade. The ones mentioned above are from Caboodle through Amazon.0

Two of the Canon's that I owned were replaced under warranty before they went for [STRIKE]landfill[/STRIKE] recycling.;)
