4 Slice Toaster - Any Recommendations?

I need a new toaster - I wanted to replace our old one as it's all crumby and leftover from our student days anyway and now its started fusing the electrics so I've got a proper excuse!

I've looked at various places online but its a minefield - a toaster should be a toaster, but there are so many with negative reviews I don't know what to believe!

My requirements:
4 slice
Can select to do 2 or 4 slices
Crumb tray
Not shiny stainless steel (brushed, cream or black)

And obviously don't want to spend a fortune (although OH has been eyeing up some around the £45 mark so any comments whether it's worth paying that much would be appreciated too).

Has anyone bought one recently and would recommend it?

Thank you :)

I bought one as you wanted from Asda a few weeks ago, It works fine, and on top of that it was only about £12!!!! Unfortunately it IS in stainless steel........

    Hi

Putting it in a 'nut shell'. Either spend the smallest amount you can on a toaster as they are all made as cheaply as possible in China and chuck it away when it goes wrong. There is just one exception - Dualit.

Otherwise buy a Dualit, one of their properly made toasters made in the UK - this will be the last toaster you will ever need to buy as all the components are designed to be easily replaced in the event of failure by the end user. It will set you back around £150! But it is an investment and you will be pleased every time you use as you will know that you made the right decision.

  • There is a smart price asda 4 slice. It's not fancy but it does the job. It's white plastic.

I have a two slice Dualit toaster and it isn't that great... Looks fab, but toasting is very uneven.... Not sure if I got a dud one.... Should have tried to take it back when it was new, but just assumed that they would all be the same....

Had several expensive Dualits. They're not perfect at toasting, nor do they last forever, but they're pretty good value and should last 10-15 years or so. Most cheap toasters will be lucky to last 12 months.

I had my £6 toaster for 4 years but had to leave it in my previous house as I replaced their old and tatty one.

Thanks all. My parents have a Dualit but I cannot justify spending over £100 on a toaster. Our current one has lasted about 6 years, 3 of those years in a student flat and was just a cheapo Argos one so I don't agree that you need an expensive one if it's going to last.

I've been looking at this one from Argos which isn't too expensive but also looks quite good: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4233220/Trail/searchtext%3ETOASTER.htm. Also gets decent reviews but I'm never sure whether Argos just delete / don't publish really negative ones!
  • We've got this one which is half price at Argos and works well and looks nice also. We had the two sluice version a number of years ago for a wedding present (in the loft I think) so no problems with reliability and gets good reviews

I wouldn't spend out for a Dualit, too many mixed reviews on them these days
  • I've got this Argos one... We had a relatively pricey Breville one bought for us as a wedding present but it blew up within 12 months so we just swapped for a cheap one...

It toasts just fine, you can do one side or both and the temperature is easily changed...
