Is there any point asking for mattress advice on here?

To make the point I was making.

Is that not a valid reason to post?

This is the I wanna buy-it or do-it board if you want to have a whinge post here:

And anyway, if you're not happy with Tim's advice (because that's who you're having a pop at) then put him on ignore. Problem solved.

I have been trawling bed shops including the smaller independent stores. Its giving me a right headache! Ive read almost every post on here.

I have a bad back and used to have a firm bed, however as I have got older my comfort requirements have changed. The old firm mattress I used at my parents makes me ache and the relaxsan orthosoft that we have currently is also not the best now either.
I had put on a lot of weight but have now lost 3stone and am looking to loose another 3 stone. Would this change anything? Should I wait before I buy another bed??

I have found some mattresses that I found to be the most comfortable at the moment. All are pocket sprung and turnable.

Somnus - Jewel 3000 spring and 550 in divan base
Somnus - majestic 3000 spring bedstead mattress
Parker - wakehurst which says can be used on bed frames but comes with a divan base?

Dare i say Pocket spring co - dales naturals - buckden 1200 spring.

All are quite expensive but are definitely the sort of comfort we are after.

What I would like to know is if anyone has any suggestions of a non silent night company that may do a more affordable similar feel mattress?? We dont mind paying for a decent bed that will last but dont want to pay over the odds for something that isnt worth the money.

    Thanks in advance.

P.s My husband would not allow ordering from an online company without trying the bed somewhere first so that is out of the question - guarantee or not :)

3000 pocket springs are far too many, and are just an expensive gimmick. More than 800 pocket springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. If there are too many springs, then to fit them all into the mattress they have to be very small and weak, and get damaged easily.

I can't find the parker wakehurst listed anywhere, but if they are made by Parker mattresses then their site says that they only do open coil sprung, and continuous sprung:eek: mattresses.

As for the Pocket Spring Bed Company, they are part of the Silentnight group:eek::eek:

You need to explain to your husband that you can only get a very rough idea by trying a mattress in a shop. You need to be able to sleep on a mattress to know for sure if it is suitable for you.
  • Having read through most (if not all) of the threads trying to figure out which mattress myself and the OH should go for (and driving her insane in the process!), I can understand why some people would be frustrated that there's no quick solution to the which mattress question.

I'd never even thought about buying a mattress online before reading the threads and seeing the difference in prices, and I was intent on having to try them out in store (although I think all the visits to different shops may have been what pushed her over the edge!).

However, without the advice of many people on this board (particularly Tim) I'd have probably gone straight to Dreams and ended up spending a fortune on an over-priced pillow-top mattress so I'm very glad for all the info I've picked up.

One thing I have noticed is that trying to find a turnable (two-sided) pocket-spring and latex mattress is not easy, however I did come across 2 I was interested in and would be grateful for any comments on, or feedback from anyone who's bought, either of the following:

    1. La Romantica Vienna - King Size. 1500 pocket springs, and 2" latex both sides: currently priced somewhere betwen £715 and £800. OR
    2. Millbrook Saturn 2500 - King Size. 2500 pocket springs with 30mm of latex both sides: currently priced between £819 and £900.

The only other one out there I've found was the La Romantica Monaco but wasn't sure about it "only" having 1000 springs. It seems a shame that more places don't stock these type of mattresses :( as you're confined to a very select list of suppliers and as for testing them out in a shop you can forget it, particularly if you live in South Wales;). Guess that's where the home trials are vital for online shopping!

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Cheers.
  • Hi Tim

Just wanted to thank you for all the help you give...there are a lot of people who may not join in the conversations but whom may value the advice you give and i am one of them!

Could you tell me anything about Hypnos? The online retailer Achicha are selling them off from Friday and i was interested if you have an opinion.

    Thanks in advance.

Hypnos are probably one of the best of the big brands. Just avoid their non turn mattresses.

If a mattress has too many springs then in order to fit them all in the mattress they have to be very small, and can get damaged easily. I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 (there isn't a huge difference between the two as far as support goes).
  • Hi there - only just joined the MSE site but can't find the detailed info you mention on this post - sounds like it's a mine of useful information - can you tell me where I can find it. Thanks :-)

What detailed information are you looking for?
  • Hi all,
I know I posted this before but haven't really had a response so was just wondering if anyone had any views on the Millbrook Saturn 2500 mattress - as seen on the bed world website (sorry not allowed to post links just yet!).

    Cheers.

Well I'll probably get slated by someone for saying this, but this is my personal view after a gread deal of research, and knowing how mattresses are constructed:

More than 800 springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. However if a mattress has too many springs, then to fit them all into the mattress, and to get the same firmness, then the springs have to be very small and weak. So I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 springs.
