Is there any point asking for mattress advice on here?

Stock answers are;

"That's a poor quality mattress being marked up by a high street / retail park big name"

"They're good quality but expensive for what they are"

"Buy from an online retailer who lets you sleep on it for a week and send it back."

I don't have time to keep sleeping on different mattresses for a week and sending them back if they're no good. I have to make arrangements to be available for delivery, and I imagine the same applies to returns. Besides, I don't even know which online retailers to go to do do that because nobody here is allowed to be specific, and I suspect many online stores will say they have that policy full well in the knowledge that it is too much hassle for most people to go through.

I'm just going to go round the local big names and department stores and buy what I have tried and is comfortable. OK I might pay £200 over the odds, but it's got the point where my time and convenience is worth more than what it looks like any advice here could save me.

To make the point I was making.

Is that not a valid reason to post?

    What is your point?

I have stated reasons why there is a disconnect between the premise of this board and the advice being given in this particular subject matter. You obviously disagree so please elaborate.

100% in agreement ,I won't post what mattress i bought , the 'experts' will tell me I bought the wrong bed/mattress from the wrong shop , spending too much money.
But its my money , my time and I sleep like a log. Also the last bed/mattress lasted well over 15 years.

It's quite simple....speak to the retailer. If they have a proper satisfaction guarantee then they will use all their knowledge and experience, combined with the information they get from you, to find you a mattress that you shouldn't have to send back. Because if they get it wrong then it costs them money.

If you go to a high street retailer, and just try the mattress out for 10 minutes, do you really think that you can tell if it is going to be comfortable to sleep on long term? Comfort isn't just about a nice soft feel, it is about how the mattress supports you, so that you don't develop aches and pains due to an unsupportive mattress. This is why pillow top mattresses are the worst gimmick of all.

You can't expect other people to do all the seaching for you, especially if this would mean them breaking forum rules. So I'm afraid it means doing some research on MSE and on google.
  • not sure if you are actually asking for advice or not :D
but I would recommend having a look about the local shops write down the ones you like and find it online cheaper :) I did this and got my myres mattress £250-£300 cheaper depending on which shop I based it on. I also got my bf to buy one the model up from ine at the same price love them both hth

I have to agree with this.

I spent hours going through the mattress thread and found it all totally pointless.

The experts can't be specific, which is, in actual fact what you want. It's pointless saying stay away from big makes/names f you can't tell people what makes/names ARE good. All that happens then is people are even more confused about what to buy.

All I got from the giant mattress post was Tim thinks the la romantica is a good make and others thought he was hinting at that because he sells them. I'm not saying I agree BTW. Just stating that was the only thing I got from reading that thread.

And I know you can't expect people to do all the research for, but that's the point, you want someone in the know to tell you what's good and what's not. Not what's not good, but not be able to give you advice about what is good. There is literally millions of mattresses available so people just research themselves in a circle because they've been given zero idea what to look for, just what not to look for.

Well there have been 100's if not 1000's of people who have found the advice given very useful. It has meant that they are armed with loads of information about what is good and what is bad in mattress design, so that when you do contact a retailer then you know what to ask for, and what is just a sales gimmick or hype.

The advice I have given is honest and impartial. I have advised on the features that aren't worth paying extra for, as they are just useless sales gimmicks. I have advised on the different types of springs, and all the advantages and disadvantages of the different types. I have advised on fabrics used on mattresses. I have advised on fillings used on mattresses. I have advised on specifications for things like memory foam. I have advised on some of the dodgy sales tactics used. I have advised about where to look to find the best deals. So if you haven't gained any knowledge from all that information, then you never will.

Forum rules prevent anyone who is in the trade from recommending anything, as it could be viewed as advertising. On the other hand if someone with no experience in the industry recommends a particular mattress, then all it tells you is that the particular model in question suited that person at that moment in time.

Only someone with a wide ranging knowledge of the industry, and the construction of mattresses can listen to you, ask a few questions, and then come up with some suitable options. They can't do that on MSE, so you will have to do some leg work yourself, and then contact the sellers.
  • I have been trawling bed shops including the smaller independent stores. Its giving me a right headache! Ive read almost every post on here.

I have a bad back and used to have a firm bed, however as I have got older my comfort requirements have changed. The old firm mattress I used at my parents makes me ache and the relaxsan orthosoft that we have currently is also not the best now either.
I had put on a lot of weight but have now lost 3stone and am looking to loose another 3 stone. Would this change anything? Should I wait before I buy another bed??

I have found some mattresses that I found to be the most comfortable at the moment. All are pocket sprung and turnable.

Somnus - Jewel 3000 spring and 550 in divan base
Somnus - majestic 3000 spring bedstead mattress
Parker - wakehurst which says can be used on bed frames but comes with a divan base?

Dare i say Pocket spring co - dales naturals - buckden 1200 spring.

All are quite expensive but are definitely the sort of comfort we are after.

What I would like to know is if anyone has any suggestions of a non silent night company that may do a more affordable similar feel mattress?? We dont mind paying for a decent bed that will last but dont want to pay over the odds for something that isnt worth the money.

    Thanks in advance.

P.s My husband would not allow ordering from an online company without trying the bed somewhere first so that is out of the question - guarantee or not :)
