  • If you want reliable access to binary newsgroups, you really need to subscribe to a Usenet provider. You'll need to pay for this, but you'll get much better retention than VM and encrypted downloads. Astraweb has been excellent for me - unlimited plans at about $11 per month (go here for special offer) or you can buy 25GB for $10 or 180GB for $25.

BTW, I used Grabit for a while but lost patience with its bugs. Have you tried SABNZBD+?

Another vote for the astraweb special, been with them for years. Use port 443 for encrypted downloads, not the default, as it is often less restricted :)

Used SABNZBD+ on windows, some years back noticed in eventviewer that for any given time that only half of that time it was downloading (nic traffic) the other 50% was doing something other than downloading. Tried free alt.binz, but they returned my payment when tried to purchase and was barred from their site for no reason. Used newsleecher, but now with Newsbins which gave a three PC and free lifetime update registration fee.
  • SAB has come a long way in recent years! It never fails to max out my 20Mb connection and being linked to an RSS feed it does all my regular downloads overnight and unattended.

I tried most of the other usenet client options but found it very difficult to find one that doesn't require a degree in applied bloatware. Grabit is very good in that respect - it's a no-nonsense client that does just what's needed and no more. Unfortunately, it seldom shuts down cleanly without resorting to the Task Manager.
