Interestingly* when people refer to a 'tannoy' they are using a brand name to refer to a 'public address system' in the same way as some people say 'hoover' to refer to a vacuum cleaner.

*I'm playing fast and loose with the word 'interesting' here.

Some companies are very protective about their brand-names even when they have become generic terms. Two I can recall are Portakabin and Jacuzzi. I have seen several letters in newspapers warning the publishers not to use their name again if the actual product reported on is not theirs.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

If 'twere me, I'd say "bring 'em on", I'd love to bring out some evidence that the original founder of the Hoover company was related to J Edgar Hoover, founder and first director of the FBI...

And we all know how he turned out, don't we boys and girls? :D

Obviously Portakabin and Jacuzzi's lawyers haven't read United Nations Law, particularly section 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights...

And are they going to personally track down every person who has ever written/spoken the company name in a general sense (that's why it's written with a lower case first letter)? I'd like to see them try, considering there are 6.5 billion people on this planet, that's a hell of a lot of law suits...

Well, he had one named after him.

Which (strangely enough considering the direction the thread has taken) was originally referred Boulder Dam... :D

Overpriced, overrated, and just as prone to breaking as anything else. If not more so...
