Interestingly* when people refer to a 'tannoy' they are using a brand name to refer to a 'public address system' in the same way as some people say 'hoover' to refer to a vacuum cleaner.
*I'm playing fast and loose with the word 'interesting' here.

Some companies are very protective about their brand-names even when they have become generic terms. Two I can recall are Portakabin and Jacuzzi. I have seen several letters in newspapers warning the publishers not to use their name again if the actual product reported on is not theirs. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -

Obviously Portakabin and Jacuzzi's lawyers haven't read United Nations Law, particularly section 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights...trisontana wrote: »Some companies are very protective about their brand-names even when they have become generic terms. And are they going to personally track down every person who has ever written/spoken the company name in a general sense (that's why it's written with a lower case first letter)? I'd like to see them try, considering there are 6.5 billion people on this planet, that's a hell of a lot of law suits...0 -
