Installing new sky+ box

I currently have a sky+ box under subscription (not freesat) - if my current box breaks down, would I be able to swap it with another sky+ box and simply insert the viewing card into the new one, or would I have to go through sky to register the new box?

Yes, different sky box with your card works fine - I did the same thing, no need to speak to sky.
This was only with a no-frills SKY box without premium channels - for sky+ see jem's post below.0 -

You would have to pair the card to the new box if you want it to work properly. With an unpaired card you will be able to watch all channels except premium channels. and you would only be able to record unencrypted channels.

Was it a Sky+ box and did you put the box in yourself or did Sky replace it?
a) No and b) me only. Having recently upgraded to HD, I can underatand the thing about lack of recording abilities, as even after ladder-monkey had installed and left, it seemed to take hours - and a phone call -
for even my existing channels to be recordable.
Anyway, not sure what's the big deal - you try it without calling, if it doesn't work, call them to pair.0 -
Here is my tipp and also how prepared i am to save money (on insurance in this case!)
I had Sky then went to Virgin after 12 months, went back to Sky+ then back to Virgin. Last year got Sky HD and last week V+
Perhaps Sky 3D next year ?
The point is for the cost of a day at home waiting for the engineer, i get 12 months coverage, introductory offer every year, new equipment (most up to date) with 12 month warranty and move my phone number.
I am lucky i am in both a Sky and Virgin area, i have also moved house during this process. my present location is not Sky friendly so i may be in trouble in 12 months unless i cut down some trees!Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!0 -

Why Sky and Virgin+? Nothing sarcastic intended, just curious...0 -
a) No and b) yes . Having recently upgraded to HD, I suspect the thing about lack of recording abilities is true, as it seemed to take hours - and a phone call -
for even my existing channels to be recordable.
If an engineer is involved in changing the box then no phone call from you should be necessary - the engineer should do it.
He would normally pair the card by running the new installation from the installer's menu. Sometimes a phone call is also required by the engineer. If done correctly by the engineer all channels and recording facilities are available before the engineer leaves - however the engineer doesn't always do this correctly.Anyway, not sure what's the big deal - you try it without calling, if it doesn't work, call them to pair.
I'm sure the OP could have figured that out without asking the question here. However having asked the question getting the correct answer would probably be helpful.0
