Refused credit for a new mobile phone contract?

This was actually my partner....... he went shopping today to buy a new phone from 3 and was surprised to hear he was rejected in a credit search.

He came home & done an online credit report/history.
Everything on it is normal/settled. No missed payments at all.
We are homeowners, both working.
His last search on the record was a couple of months ago for insurance.

Never had anything rejected before........ what does he do now??

  • This is almost bizarre, especially when you have a reasonable home owner history etc.

I have offered this elsewhere but a quick letter to 3 customer services (address available via google) they will explain why the failure occured and what info was used. that will satisfy your curiosity.

In the mean while, go to 3 online and get the phone, guarantee no rejection. Go through NECTAR first for a couple of thausand bonus NECTAR points before you sign.
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!

They told me they do the same searches over the phone/online as they would do in store so didn't want to risk another credit search?

Quick update, I've also done the Experian Credit Check and everything is 'Satisfactory' in there as well. Also did the Credit Score and it was perfect as well.

P'd off because of this and scared to try anything else incase it affects my credit score :(

DO NOT (R) DO NOT pay for your credit score from these companies, it means diddly squat. If you want a score that is as much use, pm me and I will give you my paypal address and you can forward the money to me, in return I will give you my score for you.

Ask them, they are obliged to give you the reason, you were refused.

My OH originally got declined from 3, he checked his Experian files and they hadn't done a search:eek:

It turned out, they say they take £1.95 from a debit/credit card, well they could not ID him with the card!
Got back in touch and they sorted it out, it my have been that.

They took 50p from the card, and i've checked with my card company who say the debit is 'pending'. Both times declined with no reason given on the screen.

Went to JJB after the 2nd time and bought a new hoodie, so no trouble with funds, card working, etc.

Will phone 3 customer services tomorrow and if i get no joy i'll pop a letter off.

Still annoyed though. Couldn't believe it when the guy said it was declined!!

Thanks to everyone for taking the trouble to reply BTW.

Out of curiosity can I ask what Mobile Phone he was trying to get?

I've been told that the iPhone 4 for example has a higher score needed than a Sim Only deal, although some people say the check is the same.
