I hear this story - or some version of it - about three times a week. At least. friendship and work is a bad idea. Friendship with your manager and work - a really bad idea. Provided you were given a weeks notice (or your contractual notice if it was more) then I am afraid there is absolutely nothing you can do but learn the lesson. Sorry.
As the OP's permanent contract was not due to start until 1 September, would any notice apply?
doobiesis - were you on a temp contract direct with the employer or did an agency pay your wages? If it was the former then there should have been a notice period - and that would be at least a week if you had worked under that contract for a month or more.0 -
I think it is fatal to start a friendship with your supervisor/manager. With me I work a few hours a week but do not get involved with team events or making friends with people I work with.0

Yes, still entitled to the legal minimum notice or pay in lieu.
A claim for this could be taken to an ET regardless of length of service.
Otherwise, unless the OP can argue discrimination (disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation, pregnancy etc) then no other claim can be made - sorry!0 -

I simply cannot understand the attraction of facebook. I would NEVER use it. And I agree with the poster above who says the people you work with are not your friends, it's great if you get along with them but when the chips are down your well being or continued employment will not be their priority.~*~ If you don't need it, it isn't a bargain ~*~0

just to say this is not always the case as i am now living with and have 2 kids with a man i worked with. having said that he did take my job after getting me pregnant, i was in charge of him.0 -

It's nice that it worked out fo you. But I could find you quite a few cases where the same circumstances didn't. Any form of personal relationship in the office is playing russian roulette. You may be lucky enough to get the empty chamber - or you may not. And you won't know until the trigger is pulled. It is unfortunately a fact of life that friends in the office generally and very quickly become worst enemies in the office at the sign of any any trouble or dispute. It happens more often than not. So when you start an office relationship - whether it be friendship or more - you need to be aware that if it goes wrong you could be in for a very unhappy time.0
