Sacked! For the atmosphere in the office

Last week I was called into the office of my bosses, as I'm a temp member of staff I was given a contract to sign and bosses said they was happy with my work and wanted to take me on fulltime. The contract was signed and due to start on 1st September.

The previous day to this my supervisor put the a statment on my facebook basically saying all I did all day was sit and do my nails and straighten my hair, and maybe I should come to work one day to earn a living... I was so mad as it was uncalled for and not true, I deleted the post and emailed her to say I'd done so as it was uncalled for (we were friends and went out together outside of work)

She text me saying I was over reacting and to get over myself! I let it go as I had my contract meeting the next day.

When I got into work on the Wednesday and had my contract interview we weren't speaking, she was making snide comments about when friends desert you etc, but I ignored her. As I was leaving I failed to say goodbye to anyone in the office due to being so upset re the atmosphere of the day, when I had gone she said (and two people told me) that I hadn't signed my contract yet, and I wanna watch myself, then called me a !!!!! in front of the whole office.

I text her after I was told and said to her if she has a problem with me then she should take me to one side and not slate me in front of the office. She sent me a message on facebook telling me she was disappointed in my attitude and she was a good supervisor and she couldn't control me no more.

Went into work on the Thursday and she went in early so I knew something was going on. A bit later in the morning I was called into the MD's office where he and the Manager were sat. They told me to tell me the story from my own point of view, So i kept to the facts and didn't get upset. They were both obviously not going to listen to me, she had told them that everyone in the office had a problem with me at one time or another which wasn't true! They hadn't even spoken to the people I worked with and when I pointed this out they dismissed me and said they had to think about what to do and sent me back to my desk.

About 15mins later, the two MD's asked me back into the office and again asked me to explain myself, I told them again what she'd said about me in the office and on facebook. They then said that I've caused an atmosphere and they wanted me to go there and then.

I went totally gutted I'd lost my job! I heard from a few people after I left that she went into the MD's after my meeting with them re the contract and said that I was not happy with my wages and was only signing the contract to get the job! Just wasn't true as we eren't even on talking terms.

I feel gutted that someone suddenly takes a dislike to you and you're out of a job.

I have no rights as I was a temp, but does it count for anything that they had signed a contract with me the day before? It was not due to commence till the 1st Sept, but surely the fact they was offering me perm work would mean they was happy with my work? This was a personal vendetta for what ever reason I've no idea. One of the other temps was Buddy Buddy with the supervisor and they weren't happy I'd been given a perm job and she wasn't. I reckon she's probably sat in my chair now with a perm contract. :(

Verry sorry to hear about this. She got away with it. But she will be stupid enough to try and pull another one one day. It is unfortunate that you deleted the facebook message - unless you kept a copy. Although you were a temp, I think that this kind of thing outside of work justifies a grievance being raised. But over all, I think you are better out of it. Let the primadonna make a fool of the MD.

OP im always wary of adding people i work with to facebook purely for the you described, in future id keep quiet about having a facebook and dont add anyone from work to it, up to you what you do,

    good luck finding another job
  • tbh I think you're biggest mistake was to get into a slanging match with (effectively) your boss by text and email .........there's a place for raising work related issues and that's in the work place.

Unfortunately you may be right about getting rid of you so that her mate could get a permenant role but I doubt there's much you can do about it although it would probably worth checking; having said that though they could probably get around it by making you redundant on your first day.

I hear this story - or some version of it - about three times a week. At least. friendship and work is a bad idea. Friendship with your manager and work - a really bad idea. Provided you were given a weeks notice (or your contractual notice if it was more) then I am afraid there is absolutely nothing you can do but learn the lesson. Sorry.
  • In all honesty, I think your best course of action is to take what you've learnt here in to your next job and forget about any injustice you may feel with this situation.

Never, ever get in to slanging matches via Facebook, texts etc (avoid them via all means of communication actually!) as the end result is never good, the only thing gained is a reputation for being unprofessional.

I appreciate that it's really not nice to be on the receiving end of such treatment, but seeing as you can't change the outcome here you should focus instead on doing what you can to ensure it doesn't happen again.

a lessen learned... the people u work with are NEVER your friends. Never add them to ur FB, EVER!

However u should have kept the msgs and printed them off and shown them to defend ur case, as even though u still woulda bin sacked at LEAST they will have seen what she actually did rather than u just telling them, when of course to them u could be making it up.

ur better off out of there though. she sounds a right bitter old HAG!

I disagree with this statement completely.

However, I would suggest never to add anyone who is your senior in the company to Facebook as at some point it is likely to bite you in the bum.

I disagree, if you have a social networking profile, you need to be a bit more passive with comments made by others. I can't so I deactivated my account and don't share out my number to people at work. It opens up a whole load of problems if you get on the wrong side of someone which is easy to do in a work environment especially when they're suck-ups left, right and centre.

As a manager myself, I'd like to say that you have been treated badly.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it.

It is difficult to manage or be managed by friends (facebook aside).

The only way is to accept that we are different people at work and act professionally. This didn't happen with your manager.

Put this behind you and move on to the next job. You have learned how not to manage for when you are in that position.

    Best wishes
