Scrapping Cars - Is This Allowed?
My partner had his car clamped and towed as it had no insurance (he had got his dates wrong with his renewal). As he couldn't find the log book, he had to order a new one. In the meantime, the company have scrapped his car as they only hold onto it for 14 days, knowing he is waiting for a new log book.

Seems soPolice will take keys if your car has no insurance...
Now if you're caught red handed without car insurance you're forced to hand your keys to the police at the roadside. There are no exceptions -this applies to everyone; it doesn't matter if it's just a forgetful mistake or conscious driving without insurance.
Then you'll have to get your skates on! You've just 14 days to produce a valid insurance policy to the police and collect your car. And other costs mount up. Before you can collect your car, you have to pay the cost of kerbside recovery (around £105) and the cost of secure storage - and that could easily amount to £15 a day. So, if you leave collecting your car to the 14th day, you could be in for a bill for £315.
And if you don't reclaim your car, off to the crusher it goes!

Thanks but what if you have sent off for a log book to be able to re-claim your car? 14 days is an unrealistic timescale.0 -
Just out of interest, how are you able to get your dates wrong with insurance?
I find a month before its due, every insurer I've ever asked for a quote bombard me with junk mail. Then I get a letter from my insurer saying I need do nothing, they'll renew it automatically and the next years insurance will be £x.
The ones that automatically renew automatically (IYSWIM), would automatically renew it anyway.0 -

He had temporary cover and genuinely forgot to renew.0 -

Probably why they only give 14 days to act.
I'm sure there was some kind of study a few years back which recommended Insurers have to be more pro-active in ensuring drivers remain insured (hence all the junk mail reminders), along with the rapid rollout of ANPR.
With this in place, the chances of both forgetting to renew AND misplacing the documentation required must have been considered pretty remote.

His mum lost the log book as she was the last to use the paperwork and it was a genuine mistake with regards to dates and insurance. Yes, he had been in contact with the company about sending off for a new log book. I am not saying they shouldnt be punished but scrapping the car completely?0 -

It isn't the company who decides to scrap it - its the Police/VOSA etc.0 -

It does sound harsh but what about the renewal reminders?
Are you saying none were received?
How long had it been uninsured for?0
