that is scary, sometimes your house insurance covers this risk.

Yes that is my understanding too; it is a consequential loss & would usually be covered.
  • I think that in some ares the water board fit a meter for each property.
Owners can use it straightaway or not.
When the property changes hand the new owner has to pay for a metered water supply.
It is more efficient I guess to buy a large number of meters and connect every house in a particular area than it is to install meters only where requested to do so.

  • How did you get the free trigger gun? I can't see any reference to this on their website.

All depends on size of house and number of occupants. We save about £26+ a month for two of us in a 3 bed house. Probably meters not good for large families unless they inhabit very large houses. Hope of use!! ??? ::)

  • i use south east water, and as my flat is a new build, it automatically had a water meter. they set up my direct debit of just under a tenner a month (there own calculation) and give or take a few pounds it had covered the cost of usage up until april. early december to early april i used 40 cubic meters.

early april to 27th sep i had used 193 cubic metres, which has left me owing 233 quid even after my direct debits were taken into account. i phoned SEW up yesterday to query this and the geezer said he would send out an engineer within 30 days. he turned up this afternoon (lack of work at the moment, apparently) to check that the meter wasnt faulty. he told me since the last reading, 27th sep until today, which works out as a mammoth 11 days, i had used 20 cubic metres. :o

now either water meters are very expensive or i have a leak. needless to say i hope it is a leak. :-/
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

Well you can easily check for a leak, turn off the stoptap inside the property then have a look at the meter if its spinning you have a leak somewhere between the meter and the stoptap.

I rang today and the lady said I would save at least £100 per year by having a meter, she is sending PP form and I will switch!
Thanks to you all, am on a huge economy drive due to loss of job.
Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

  • We are thinking of moving house. Is it right that if the house we plan to purchase does NOT have a water meter, then the water company (Severn Trent) can install one without us having any right to demand that it be removed?

I think after 12 months you have the right to get it removed
  • I believe the person who had it installed has the right to have it removed but anybody moving into a house that already has a meter cannot have it removed.
