Read about the potential fault on the internet during my research into the bike prior to purchase. Did know that it was a possible weak point. As said before, the dealer mentioned nothing at all about the gearbox or any potential problems, I found out the details from a Yamaha owners forum.

Problem didnt show itself during test ride as it does seem to be very intermittent - havent had it slip out of gear again but earlier this morning second gear felt very rough. Bit like a car gearbox that has been "crunched" heavily; almost as though there is a gear with broken teeth in the box somewhere.

Its very clunky at times when it changes into second from first, not too bad going back to second from third though so its possible that the selector forks are not engaging it fully.

Have only done 21 miles on it since I bought the bike, though as said the bike has done 23,5000 miles so its possible that it has been like this for a while.

Definitely think that its worth a trip back to the dealer next week to see if they will inspect it and/or fix any broken gear. Nothing to lose really.

Check you vin number there was a recall on YZF models

There has been a recall on models in 16/03/1999 VIN Number RJO31-0000002 TO 0009249.Recall is possibility of transmission seizure. If you think your bike fits this time and frame vin number then don't be fobbed off the recall number you should quote is RM/99/005.Your bike will need to fit the dates 01/01/1999-31/12/1999 although your bike is registered in 2000 it could well be a 1999 model.

Actually this might be the wrong bike is it a thundercat or R6?
Nothing to see here, move along.

I shall have a look at the VIN, the bike was first registered in June 1999 according to the V5/C supplement I have at the moment.

The bike is a Yamaha YZF600R Thundercat.

Thanks for your help, shall have a look into it.

My Fazer 600 (much the same bike) has often clunked into first from new, sometimes into second too. Just the way they are!

I would write a nice letter to the dealer stating that I was concerned and him to examine the vehicle for his opinion / advice. The more you ride it / longer you leave it the weaker your case for a claim.

My R6 towards it's sale needed an extra nudge into 2nd, but then it had been thrashed.

Thanks, that was my thought too. Shall pop it round to the dealer on Tuesday I think - thankfully its near where I work so can go there at lunchtime and explain my concern.

    Thanks for the advice
  • Many bike gearboxes are abused by numpties doing clutchless changes, and it's quite likely a potential weakness in the gearbox was exacerbated by this sort of treatment by a ham-footed previous owner.
Best of luck with the warranty claim. From where I'm sitting it seems you have a leg to stand on.
