totally agree about the noise of traffic the rain, when i as ill or restless as a kd, mum used to open my room window and the noise would have me out in minutes lol.
I have lived on a main road since i was born, its a dual carriage way, bus route, main link from the police station to the city centre and also the fire station is at the top of our street and to get into middle of estate, they have to pass our house. the noise doesn't even register. it seems safer somehow as well as there is always activity and its never totally deserted. a neighbour from down the road, lives in a similar set up house to ours once tried to unlock our door thinking it was her house when i was home alone one night and cos she was making so much noise, other people passing actually came to check on what was going on. i don't think this would have happened if our house had been in a quieter street.
i actually find it hard to sleep if everything is silent (i must be soooo weird)
i did move out for 9 months a few years ago to a much quieter area and could never settle.
im looking to get my own place soon and do still want to be in a busier street
also, the main A64 passes the top of our street and kind of passes behind our house on a diagonal, still don't pick up amuch noise.0 -
i would not buy on a main road again. i have had my house on the market for 2 years! its very rural and normally quiet, just a little traffic in the rush hours. it has never bothered me and the house is sideways on to the road and we cannot even see it. however it has but off a lot of viewers simply because it is there and no cars have gone passed when they are hear!0

I'm with Newone I think.
Have lived on main roads for the last 12 years and don't mind it at all. You get the sirens and trucks, but I honestly don't mind and sleep through everything. After a while I think you block it out or just don't notice. When staying at a B&B this summer it was so quiet it felt a bit odd. Guess it depends how you sleep and whether you mind the noise.
The windows are and always have been open a lot.
The dust and fumes can get to you though. When we had net curtains they were always filthy and doing some work in side alley the cables left my hands jet black - they'd only been there a year or two.0 -
I live on a main road on the outskirts of a town, this road is the A62 - main road between Leeds and Manchester before the motorway opened, but still hellishly busy.
Before moving in with my OH, I lived at the end of a cul-de-sac so it was a bit of a shock to say the least.
We get loads of LGV's, emergency services, cars, bikes and tractors passing. And there's a chemical plant across the road too:o
However, we put in new double glazing this year and it's almost silent with the windows shut.
Personally, I think you make the most of what you've got or what you can afford. We put the house on the markewt earlier this year and had no offers. Put it on again 2 weeks ago and it sold within 3 days.
Unfortunately, we're moving somewhere much quiter so we might have to see if we can divert a few wagons past the new house:D0 -
My heart sank when I saw this thread! We've just put our house on the market - and it's on a main road (not a dual carriageway or anything, just one of the main routes into town, still a 30 limit).
I have to say our location hasn't bothered my partner or I at all - I think it's all about compromise really. It would be nice to be in a quiet little side road, but we also wanted to be close to the station and it's also great to have the local shops within 2mins walk. We do get the odd siren, and heavy trucks, and of course souped-up corsas with their stereos thumping, but we're double-glazed, and the noise doesn't seem intrusive. Even in the summer when the windows are open, the noise isn't such that it keeps us awake (the only time it did was when the local council were resurfacing the road at night to minimise disruption, but this will happen once in a blue moon!)
I suppose at the end of the day it's what you're used to - both of us moved to our present place having lived in London, where you are extremely lucky (or wealthy!) to live somewhere quiet!
Anyway, I hope that there are plenty of people who have similar opinions about traffic noise to us!0 -
