I think that every buyer will have a 'wish-list' of requirements for their new home - a list of must-haves, must-not-haves and would-be-nices.... in the end it comes down to finding an acceptable balance that best suits your wishes and your pocket.

My house is on a main road, but this simply wasn't a major consideration when I bought my house, nor has it been a particular problem since. Other things were and are more important, like having front and back gardens, being an older property with thick walls, being close to town, etc, etc. I don't have kids or pets though - if I had I would probably have set out with a different wish-list and be living in a different house now!

Just get really good triple glazing. I live next to the M4 and it's not a problem.

Though it would be nice to be able open the windows during the summer.

I spent about about 18yrs in total living on main roads close to the centre of London, & a few more living on busy B roads, but as I got older I had a real desire to move & live on a nice typical quiet surbuban street.

Really I've hated it since I've moved here. I just find it too quiet & boring. I miss the hustle & bustle of life going on just outside my window. Here it's it's quite an isolating feeling with just other houses to look out onto & & it's rather exciting when people walk by & you see there is some life outside after all.:o

I intend moving next year & will be looking for a house either on a main road or a B road. How I wish I hadn't listened to people who advised me against buying a house on a busy road.

I guess there is a lot of truth in the saying that you can take the girl out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the girl. I've come to the conclusion that if you have lived with with the hustle & bustle of busy roads for a long part of your life then it can be difficult to adjust to a quieter life.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I live on a main road although its not constant heavy traffic. We do have a lollipop lady for school run times so I suppose its fairly busy.

I have a 100ft plus front garden so I don't get affected by the noise. One thing I really like about it is you don't get kids hanging around like on the estate behind us. Alot of the mums from school (our kids are 5 & 6 ) would willingly swop their cul de sac houses for mine as some kids as young as 2 and 3 are always out on their bikes, playing in the road and are knocking on their doors asking if so and so can come out to play, plus the older ones hang around causing a bit of a nuisance.

The houses like mine on the main road sell quicker and for alot more money than on the estate behind us (and they are identical houses except for the land at the front)

Yes! Exactly this! It wasn't on my wish-list, but it is a real pleasure NOT to have kiddies out and about the street. For a selfish, childless spinster that is..... :)

A house similar to the one we've just bought was on the main road. What put me off was having to reverse out into traffic in the morning.

It was priced 10% cheaper than it would have been had it been in a better position; still not sold.

My parents live on a main road. When I lived with them I got used to the sound of traffic going up and down all night but now I live in a quiet road when I go back there for a visit I really notice it. They also can't open their front windows because of traffic fumes and they have to watch the dog like a hawk incase she goes in the road. Also the bus stop is right outside the front window so if it's a double decker people are peering into my old bedroom all the time. I had to watch what I was doing in there when I lived there incase I had an audience.

same thing with lorried and us nearly, the house was not that tall

plus we had some young chavs on the other side of the road, renting a house with a flat roof, whenever it was hot enough for them to, they would play music out loud and have bbq on the flat roof. and they also could peer into our room. lol

LOL I've got 3 kids but I wouldn't allow my children to play in the road (cul de sac or not) and I certainly wouldn't want to encourage any friendships with children who are allowed to play outside without adult supervision. Says alot about the parents in my opinion ;)

The thing about the kids is so true! I lived on a quiet street before and the kids were a thousand times more annoying than the traffic!

It is a main A road (20,000 cars per day according to the council!) but we have good double glazing and find that we can have the windows at the back open without hearing the cars / getting fumes etc. Certainly can't leave the front door open and do have to be careful of the dog. I wouldn't swop it for a house in an estate with all the horrible kids that go with a 'quiet' street.
