Aqueous cream is a soap substitute/moisturiser that is dead cheap in large tubs from a chemist. Great for sensitive skin as it doesn't contain anything that will irritate.

But only if you get it from Boots (possibly others, but I don't know of them). I do know, however, that lots of the others (Superdrug, Oilatum) contain sodium lauryl (laureth/dodecyl) sulphate, which is the stuff used to make bubble bath, washing-up liquid, shampoo etc sudsy, and it actually breaks down the skin barrier; anyone with eczema that is made worse by these products should make sure to avoid aqueous cream that contains that chemical. Aqueous cream should be a standard recipe containing little more than water, paraffin wax, liquid paraffin and an antiseptic (usually creosol), but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work that way. Safest is Boots, at about 3 quid for a huge 1kg tub. Fantastic stuff - bit medicinal smelling, but brilliant for dry skin.

Baby oil is supposed to be good for getting eye make up off?

I'm still using the Clinique soap bar - which must be practically an antique by now...so haven't come up with an OS replacement yet!

    Hi there!

As has been said before, please do not use the lemon oil (citrus limon, from the rutaceae family). It is, like the other citrus oils, phototoxic and should not, therefore, be used on skin that will be exposed to sunlight (i.e. the face); though it is fine used in body massage - if in the correct dilution.

Baby oil - or any other mineral products (e.g. petroleum jelly, vaseline, etc) should not be used on the skin long term. They create a barrier which prevents moisture/sebum/sweat passing either into or out of the skin though vaseline/petroleum jelly/etc is useful if you are going for a walk in harsh weather as it prevents the skin being damaged - but should be washed off when you get back indoors.

If I was you, I would buy a good vegetable oil - can be anything, but sweet almond is nice and light for the face - and a good quality essential oil - not necessarily the cheapest, and remember to make sure it is a pure essential oil and not already diluted.

Since your skin is dry, I would probably use lavender - cheap and multi-use (it is fantastic if you get burnt!). Use a low, 1% dilution - 3 drops per 20mls of carrier oil.

If you decide to use this, let me know how you get on.

    Sorry for the long post!

  • Hi, Only just seen this thread. I agree with Zippy. I did an aromatherapy massage course and remember that citrus oils 'can' make your skin photosensitive- ie if you go out in the sunshine afterwards it can cause rashes etc. Just try it with a small amount and see what happens. Mind you we need some sun first!

    Hi all,

On Freecycle.org I got some great aromatherapy books so I am all inspired to make my own moisturiser!

    The book recommended:

    - Bees wax
    - Pure cocoa butter
    - Base oil
    - Essential oils

I have bought the following from E-bay:

    - Bees wax
    - Pure cocoa butter

    From Holland & Barret:

    - Sweet Almond massage oil (has other things in like vitamin E too)
    - Pure Lavender oil

So I am now just waiting for the E-bay bits to arrive - very excited!

Can anyone recommend a supplier of good quality pure oils as follows:

    - Jasmine
    - Chamomile (apparently Roman variety is nicest?)

I intend to make one 'night' cream (with Lavender) and one 'day' cream with Jasmine and Chamomile, or maybe just Jasmine...

Many thanks all - you have inspired me so much!

  • Hi I often add a couple of drops of geranium oil as I like the small and its ok for most skin types as its balancing (good for the emotions too) and its not as expensive as rose and neroil.

The best book i have for this sort of thing is "the fragrant Pharmancy " by valarie wormwood. It has advice for every thing possible that you can use essential oils for, including cleaning products and even recepies for the edible ones. might be able to get a cheap copy on ebay/ amazon

If you have dry skin tou could try using sweet alomond oil as a base with a few drops of you choosen oil, as it really does go a long way I often use this at nigh, as my skin is normal , so a bit heavy for me in the day.

    Hope this might help:D

  • Hi sorry just to add, that chamomile and jasmine, are two of the most expensive oils there are my last bottle of comomile cost £20+ and jasmine is even more. However you can sometimes buy them already diluted.

I used to buy all my oils from tisserand or boots etc, but now i go to a great independent shop in leeds (near where i live)They do mail order so i send you their details.

Thanks for the PM PinkParrott - will check them out!

I saw a great site - essentialoilsonline.co.uk and they had macademia nut oil and also jojoba oil - should I get those as well as the sweet almond oil I bought today? The sweet almond oil was blended, but the macademia and jojoba oils on that site are pure so I wondered if they would be worth investing in...
