time for specs

i wouldnt reccomend anyone get their first pair of specs online, you will most likely need some sort of aftercare fitting/adjustments and may not settle into specs straight away and it will be very difficult to get sorted if you cant go into the shop.Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais

Yes got to agree with Paulwf, I go to an expensive optician for the whole works. But I too have to wear my glasses dawn to dusk. A pair lasts me around 5 years.
If you just need them for reading there's also Glasses Direct. I've never used them but there was an offer on here a while ago and I thought they looked good.:A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%0 -
don't forget your test should get paid for by work if you are using computers for so long each day.
I use asda as they are local & have a good choice. I would just go around the shops & find a pair you like.0 -
I get mine at Specsavers.
You should get the eyetest & up to about £70 for a pair of glasses for VDU work paid for by your work.0 -
one thing to take into account when getting glasses is the bit that sits on your nose - the ones with the little rubber pads on the metal section, for me, are very uncomfortable but you may not realise this when trying them on, the glasses that are all one peice of plastic over the nose are far more comfortable for me so bear this in mind0

first, many thanks for all the replies, pointers and advice which i never even considered!
Does anyone know if the employeer contribute? I seem to recall hearing someone in an old workplace of mine saying they would pay the first x amount of money (cant remember what it was!) because we were sat at a monitor all day as part of our employment.
thanks!0 -
My current glasses are from selectspecs.com. One of my friends scoffed at me getting glasses off the internet because they might need adjusting, etc.. but at two pairs plus p&p for £13 I thought I'd give it a stab. And they're absolutely fab. I've worn glasses for 30ish years
and the pair I've settled on wearing mostly of the two is the first pair that loads of people have complimented me on. I've also had lovely frameless ones off the internet for a fraction of the price that Specsavers charge (I find them a total rip-off to be honest). I've also had a pair that my brother brought back from Hong Kong (he took my prescription out there with him) as they are cheap out there and again they were great (good excuse to book a holiday).
Btw, I also get contact lenses through Daysoft - much cheapness!
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -

This
"Employees covered by the Regulations can ask their employer to provide and pay
for an eye and eyesight test. This is a test by an optometrist or doctor. There is
also an entitlement to further tests at regular intervals; the optometrist doing the
first test can recommend when the next should be. Employers only have to pay for
spectacles if special ones (for example, prescribed for the distance at which the
screen is viewed) are needed and normal ones cannot be used."

if i remember rightly the company contribution is if the specs are required ONLY for computer use, but some companies are willing to give to any employer so its always worth asking.
