Birmingham Toll Road

Going to Plymouth you'll be using the M5, the M6 Toll takes you in totally the wrong direction to get to the M5Carlisle. If you get off at the first junction where it turns into the M6 (J44), turn right at the top of the sliproad, get in the right hand lane and then turn right at the traffic lights (follow the truck stop signs), there's McDonalds etc there.
J43 (A69 Carlisle) has a tesco right next to it, cheaper food and fuel than on the motorway
Also M74 at Hamilton, there is a Morrisons that is only a small diversion off the motorway, you leave at J5 and get back on at J6
And back on the M6, J28 for Leyland, there is a Morrisons and loads of small shops/takeaways within 1 mile of the motorway0 -

Small diversion! The only Morrisons I know of in Hamilton is next to Hamilton Accies ground and off at J5 and back on a J6 requires a journey round Raith Interchange (just no any time from 7am to 9.30am and 3pm to 6.30pm) and then through Hamilton Town Centre. You're better getting off at J6 and going to the Asda, which backs onto the motorway and then back on at J6.
For petrol, heading back north the Shell at M6 before Gretna at Todhills is often very reasonably priced (as it is a rest area not a motorway services). It is what I use-at 10pm, going back north, dash off motorway and fill up quickly.
Other option is Bamber Bridge J29 M6 which has a Sainsbury's Petrol Station, a Burger King and a pub restaurant barely off the M6/M65 motorway.0
