Birmingham Toll Road

I won't use it on principal, and the normal motorways aren't bad now anyway.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Your kidding right ?
I do 4000 + miles a month
I have been stuck in traffic on every motorway in the country, mostly queueing to get past accidents where idiots have been on their mobile phones or driving too fast & too close
That stretch of motorway at Birmingham is second only to the M25 Watford to M4
I use the toll but only in rush hour usually, put traffic announcement on,if your radio has it ? that way you will pick up all the local traffic news.
I often find that Sally traffic on BBC2 is inaccurate (or rather the people who ring in are sometimes over/under exagerating)
Just try to keep your sense of humour, stop often and don't forget fresh air you can get very drowsy with the windows up.
Hope you have a safe journey & a great holiday0 -
If you can get past Brum before about 10.00 a.m you'll be ok on the M6, but after that, use the toll road and go round the bottom of the 42. It'll be much quicker then.
Bear in mind if Sally traffic says the queue is back to j11, it means j12 by the time you hear it...I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I've never had a problem, but I suppose there must be less crashes on the toll road as it's normally empty.0 -
I'd suggest booking a budget hotel somewhere north of Birmingham and splitting the trip over two days!GlasgowGal wrote: »Hi We are travelling from Aberdeen to Plymouth tomorrow
It would add, I'd guess, around 20-25 miles to your journey. It may well help you bypass some roadworks between J11 and J8 on the M6, but I'd be surprised if it saved you any time.and some people have advised us to use the Birmingham Toll Road.
I'm with hubby.Hubby is not convinced as he thinks it will take us off in the wrong direction.
I think they'll be horribly busy. My suggestion to split the journey over two days is actually a serious one. An early start on day two could ensure you miss the worst of the roadworks mentioned. At the very least share the driving and make regular stops. Will the roads be really busy tomorrow due to the Bank Holiday?
Good luck!0 -
Can I just add to my rather negative reply - on any day other than a Bank Holiday Friday it sounds like a bit of an adventure and I'd love to have an excuse to go on a nice long trip (see my sig - I'm a debt-free-wannabee - not much spare cash for travelling right now!).
Good luck - sounds like you've got the right attitude; share the driving, stop regularly, and keep your sense of humour.Long-haul Supporters DFW 120

We are stopping for 2 hours in Perth (hubbys work) an hour or so at Carlisle and again around Birmingham and any other stops we need. We are leaving at 7am and if we get to Plymouth by 9pm then we will be well please and exhausted. We need to drive south to get the lovely sunny weather as its been pretty dull and damp up north
Carlisle. If you get off at the first junction where it turns into the M6 (J44), turn right at the top of the sliproad, get in the right hand lane and then turn right at the traffic lights (follow the truck stop signs), there's McDonalds etc there.0 -

Good point to let them know where to avoid.
I assume that is what you meant......:D0 -
The last few weeks on the M6 south past Walsall have been horrific.
I'd use the Toll.0 -
I use the M6 Toll regularly BUT I would probably head for the M5 from the M6 to go to Plymouth and the M6 Toll is a long way round, yes there are road works and there will be lots of people heading off for the SouthWest but you will be wasting a fiver IMHO and this is a money saving site....Have a good trip.0
