  • I think with JCP it's a case of 'damned if they do, damned if they don't'. I've had differing treatment over the last few months on my visits to the job shop; eager security who help me around, security who ignore me, staff who actually seem to care, staff who clearly don't care. I have to say, and this may make me sound like an awful snob, but the worst people in the job shop are other customers. That's for another thread on another board though...

Can I just also say that my DEA is an angel, she often phones me just to see how I'm getting on. She's lovely. :)

Because staff get threatened and abused on a daily basis.
    True.

However, the fact that staff have been abused cannot be used as an excuse to treat someone else in this manner.

It was job centre in Rotherham, i told them to call the police but they said they would cancel my appointment too if they did.
It's a pity that you didn't have the leisure to call their bluff.

It would have been interesting to see what the police would have made of this nonsense.

I know someone that works at Roth JCP and their incidence rate is well above average.
    Which should prompt some questions.

Is there something wrong with local people? Or is there something wrong with the staff at that particular office?

The safety of the staff means that you can't 'wait in the waiting area'. Insanity.
She refused to go and wait outside and it ended with her breaking down in tears and the police being called.
It would be interesting to submit an FOI request requesting details of the incident.
In the end because of all the fuss made she was deemed to late to be seen by the advisor.
    How convenient for them.

Some years ago, I had a similar experience. Whilst waiting for an interview at a Jobcentre, I was paged (I carried a pager because a close relative had a serious medical condition and I needed to be instantly available to make decisions).

I needed to make an immediate telephone call. I requested the use of a telephone, explaing the circumstances. I was told to f*ck off. I then left, explaining that I would use the public telephone in the street outside (this was before mobile phones were common), and would return in a few minutes. They cancelled my appointment, stating that I 'had failed to attend'.

Nice people. Now, is it any wonder that they get punched out from time to time?

Please do complain, the way you were treated was out of order IMO. I was lucky in the last dealing i had with the JC though at first they' treated me like crap. Luckily' the advisor i was seeing could see i was having a panic attack and managed to get me a private room.

I have had experience with the Norwich Jobcentre.

To cut a long story short, the Norwich Jobcentre is down a REALLY steep hill (so steep that they don't let anyone walk down it in the winter due to ice) I am a wheelchair user and asked if I could be let in the top, and use a lift to go down to the 'sign on' place (before I was on incap) They didn't even let me use the lift due to 'safety reasons', so I had to get a member of staff to push me up the hill everytime I went to the Jobcentre. One of the managers was a wheelchair user and I sent him an email explaining the problems and he arranged for me to use the lift...

The next time I went in, they still didn't let me use the lift, despite word coming from the manager that I would be allowed! This caused a big argument from the manager and the members of security which also involved the security members not opening the gate for me so I had to wait there while someone else got a keycard! All very childish...

To be fair, there were a couple of nice security guards who often said while pushing me up the hill that they thought it was shocking that I wasn't allowed to use the lift... the other security guards were just horrible imo.

In the last place I lived, the JobCentre was a truly scary place. They would point out that it was a 'rough' area. I have ASD and used to have Panic Attacks in that building. On one occassion I was in tears and my advisor told me that I was upsetting the other clients and if I didn't stop crying she would call the police. Not surprisingly this didn't make me feel any better! I was eventually escorted to the door by one of the guards and left in the rain on the doorstop bawling my eyes out until I had the strength to phone for help....They also didn't let you wait inside. You had to turn up no more than 10 minutes early, or wait outside (no shelter...fine if you walked, but not if you needed to gwet a bus that only went once an hour)

On the other hand....the place I live now is different! Last time I went we phoned in advance and were only there 2 minutes before someone came and escorted us to a private room (where I felt much safer!)....and now I get home visits most of the time.
