I could have sworn the original post didn't mention the model
Man I'm cracking up. I'll have a dig about see if I can find any tools to reset the inks on the Lexmark or how to put it into maintenance mode.
David, it varies. Sometimes when you get that message when it's completely empty and it won't print whatsoever. Whereas sometimes you get the message you still can because there is ink levels that are low. The message just appears when there is a warning, however ignoring it will not fix the original issue because we need to force the printer to recognise the new inkOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

"I don't really think that ditching it and buying yet another one is an excercise in money saving. "
Well it might be ,especially if you can sell the printer to some other chump before buying ink that often costs more than the printer. If I gave you a car that did 3 mpg would you keep it and just pour fuel into it?
Just found this http://www.trustedreviews.com/printers/review/2009/09/15/Lexmark-Interpret-S405---Wireless-Inkjet-All-in-One/comments0 -
Easy way to decide.
lexmark cartridge aprox 8ml of ink in the cartridge for about £12 for a compatible epson compatible 16ml for £1.89 ???
your lexmark will take 1 colour cartridge so when 1 colour runs out you bin the remaining 2 colours that are left in the cartridge with an epson you have 4 cartridges 1 x black 1 x red 1 x blue 1 x yellow so when 1 runs out you just change that cartrdige, it is the same with the brother machines again the same as epson and only £1.89 per cartridge.
your lexmark will have 2 cartridges listed for it 1 will be listed as an economy cartridge and will be about £2 or £3 less than the standard cartridge but dont get sucked in to buying the economy cartridge as they only have 1/3rd of the onk in as the standard cartridge. and work out even more expensive to run,
